Helen Worth has played the iconic role of Gail Platt for 50 years
Watching the soaps over Christmas is a must for most households regardless of if you’re a fan or not. One thing promised over the festive period is drama alongside twists and turns in our favourite fictional villages and towns.
Coronation Street is set to be an emotional watch tonight, December 25 as Gail Platt, played by soap icon Helen Worth will bid farewell to the cobbles after 50 years. Gail is set to walk down the aisle tonight for the seventh time but her family are far from pleased with the prospect.
Despite her family being against the idea of her marriage, Gail is planning to tie the knot with Jesse and make a fresh start with him in France. The couple rekindled their romance this year after initially meeting in Thailand a few years ago. Her own mum, Audrey has even threatened to cut ties on the mother and daughter relationship if she goes through with her plans.
Corrie boss Kate Brooks has shared an insight into the Christmas Day drama. She said: “All those secrets come to the forefront on Christmas Day, so you basically have Gail – who’s going to leave the street – in the run-up to Christmas she has found out that some of her nearest and dearest have absolutely betrayed her.”
Kate added: “She [Gail] doesn’t know who to believe, even her dear old mum has kind of lied to her and she really struggles with that. And she’s a bit like ‘I don’t know whether I want this, I don’t know whether I want to be with Jesse.'”
Coronation Street will be on for a full hour tonight on ITV1 and ITVX, airing at 7pm. There will be no episode airing on Boxing Day as ITV are instead showing a Christmas Special edition of The Masked Singer.
Jack P Shepherd, who plays Helen Worth’s onscreen son (David Platt) recently opened up on her final scenes and the input he had on how her departure from Coronation Street will unfold. Speaking to the ECHO and other press, the actor said “there is a lot going on and it all seems to be falling apart”.
He spoke about his character David Platt being worried about his Gran, Audrey, as she begins making up stories about her health so Gail doesn’t leave and his brother Nick being in a troublesome situation
In an emotional admission Jack shared how he encouraged show bosses to write in an extra scene featuring the full Platt family for Helen Worth’s final day of filming. He persuaded producers that Helen’s closest co-stars could be part of the final scene she filmed.
