‘What a journey’: EastEnders legend speaks out to mark a decade on the Square

EastEnders legend James Bye has been playing Walford icon Martin Fowler for ten years, and took to Instagram to share a special message marking the occasion.

James took over the role from previous star James Alexandrou when Martin returned to Albert Square in 2014.

During Bye’s tenure, Martin has been involved in some huge storylines, including his on-and-off relationship with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).

He became embroiled in criminality after being blackmailed by Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), and was left for dead during a robbery staged by Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota).

After 10 dramatic years, James took to social media to reflect on his time in the show.

’10 years today… A decade playing The Fowler,’ he wrote on his Instagram stories.

‘What a journey… Huge love to those of you who’ve messaged me on my anniversary today! It means so much. Truly…

‘Big love to you all… From your favourite fruit and veg man.’

In recent weeks, Martin discovered that Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) had given birth to his son, Roman, who is currently in hospital with liver problems.

Martin recently decided to try and get custody of his son, but in upcoming scenes Ruby foils his plot and refuses him access to his son.

However, when Roman’s condition takes a turn for the worse, Martin agrees to put his life on the line by donating his liver to save his son.

Ahead of his operation, Martin shares a heart-to-heart with Stacey about his fears over the procedure.

As they share an emotional moment, Martin leans in for a kiss, but how will Stacey respond?
