Joel Deering has been going to extreme lengths to cover up his wrongdoings in Coronation Street, but the worst is still to come, as actor Calum Lill has revealed.
In upcoming scenes, it appears as though fiancé Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) is getting closer to discovering the truth when she spots a notification on his laptop asking him to rate his experience of Belfast airport.
Of course, she is quick to question him about it, but he is able to cover by explaining that he was supposed to go for work before the trip was cancelled.
‘The great thing is you’ve got two people who, for their job, they interrogate, they defend, they deflect and are going up against each other, actor Calum explained.
‘So she cross-examines him, he’s coming up with excuses and deflecting, coming up with plausible things and trying to direct her in other ways. Interesting to watch play out, they are both very good at getting answers. It’s a battle of wits and expertise.’
Viewers will know that Joel actually promised to send Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) to Ireland in a bid to stop her revealing that he was behind her near-fatal attack, though it soon became clear that he never intended her to get that far when he drugged her to induce the early labour of their son.
Things only get worse when Dee-Dee hands Joel’s ex-wife Emily a charm for Maeve’s bracelet, only to discover that she’s never had a charm bracelet.
Her suspicions grow as Emily warns her to be careful, as Joel is still paying rent on his old flat, and she is quick to find the keys in his open briefcase and head to the flat to investigate.
She soon heads inside and begins looking through the cupboards, searching for proof that he is having an affair – but will she find out more than she bargained for?
As Dee-Dee gets closer to unearthing the truth, Calum teases just how far Joel is prepared to go to keep his secret, and the worst is still to come.
‘Obviously, I can’t say how far, but its further than I thought he would go. When I read it I was scared to even play it, because it was that dark! He’ll go to any lengths that he needs to.’
