Sean Wilson’s bitter fallout with Coronation Street bosses as he insists they were ‘rude’ to him

Sean Wilson was due to return to his role as Martin Platt on Coronation Street as part of Gail Platt leaving the show after 50 years

Sean Wilson was involved in a bitter fallout with Coronation Street bosses and he insisted they were “rude” to him before show return.

However, it has now been reported that, despite recently coming back to the cobbles, he has again left the show due to “personal reasons”. Reports suggest that the actor, who played the role of Martin Platt, has left which means writers now have to come up with an alternative ending and scrap his storyline.

Sean was due to come back to Corrie six years after his last appearance but his scenes which were due to air in October have now been scrapped. He was coming back to be involved in Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) exit storyline. A spokesperson for Coronation Street told The Mirror: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”

Martin and Gail were married and had son David

However, six years ago, Sean said he would never return to the soap after he quit in 2005 due to a storyline which involved his character Martin seducing an underage girl. The actor is said to have fallen out with bosses at the time as he refused to be involved in the storyline.

When he left Coronation Street, Sean branded bosses as “rude”. He told the Daily Star at the time: “I will act again – but never with Coronation Street. They were very rude to me when I left. I would rather walk down any other street even if I had a nail in my shoe.”

Sean took a break from acting and embarked on a cheesemaking career instead. He launched his own cheese business called Artisan Farm in 2009 before going on to write a number of recipe books.

He briefly returned to Corrie back in 2018 when he came back for a few episodes which involved David Platt’s male rape storyline. A source told Daily Star at the time that producers “bent over backwards” to get him back.

They said: “They must have bent over backwards to convince him. Most stars leave quietly no matter how embittered they might feel about their exits. But Sean didn’t. He pulled no punches about why he left and how he would never come back.”

Sean played the role of Martin for two decades from 1985 to 2005. He left the show when his character and his family moved to New Zealand in 2018. He then went on to pay a final visit to Weatherfield before his departure to make his peace with his son David, who was upset that his dad was leaving the country.
