EastEnders fans are throwing it back to 2003 as they reminisce about a spin-off DVD about the iconic Slater family.
Fans of the BBC soap have taken to Reddit to share their memories of Slaters in Detention – a one off special that saw Big Mo (Laila Morse), Kat (Jessie Wallace), Lynne (Elaine Lordan), Little Mo (Kacey Ainsworth) and Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) spend the night in a prison cell.
Having been arrested after a drunken ‘school disco’ themed night out, the Slaters reminisced about their lives on the Square while waiting to be picked up from the station.
Of course, the officers on duty had no idea what they were getting into when they hauled the women in, and soon Kat was running them ragged, even using her one phone call to order pizza to the station.
Throughout the film, viewers were treated to montages of some of the Slaters’ best remembered moments, such as Kat’s colourful love life, Mo’s feud with Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement), Lynne’s relationship with Gary Hobbs (Ricky Groves), Little Mo’s ordeal at the hands of Trevor Morgan (Alex Ferns) and the revelation that Kat was Zoe’s mother.
At the end of the spin-off, it was Charlie Slater (Derek Martin) who came to the rescue, though he was left aghast when his other daughter, Belinda, was also hauled into the station for a separate offence.
Reminiscing about the iconic DVD special, one Reddit user said: ‘Me and my sister used to watch this all the time when we were little. The nostalgia!’
Another added: ‘How could we ever forget?’
There have been a number of other EastEnders spin-offs over the years, with Kat featuring in one herself. The controversial series Redwater saw Kat and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) head to Ireland to track down the son Kat didn’t know she’d had.
Show icons Bianca Jackson and Ricky Butcher (Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen) were also the subject of their own spin-off, called Last Tango in Walford.
The very first EastEnders spin-off aired on Boxing Day in 1988 and was called Civvy Street. It gave viewers a glimpse into the lives of Lou Beale, Ethel Skinner and Reg Cox when they were younger.
More recently, EastEnders has swapped DVDs for TikTok, having released two mini-series along side the current events of the show. The most recent, Spiked, revealed the events that led to Anna Knight’s (Molly Rainford) drink being spiked.
With all this nostalgia, we’re off for a spin-off marathon!
