AJ, plays the mysterious dance school assistant Marco and Curtis, joins his brother for his first episode in a scene that went viral on social media, with many viewers blasting the “wooden” acting. Standing in a children’s play area the characters share ambiguous threats against Trish, played by Denise Welch.

Marco, played by AJ, tells Jacob that Trish has been left “heartbroken” after a failed engagement, leaving Jacob smiling and saying the news has “made my day.” Marco then laughs and says “it’ll be nothing compared to what we’ve got planned for her”, while swinging on a playground roundabout.

The clip was shared on Twitter by user @JakeCP and was met with disdain online.Former Hollyoaks actor Gerard McCarthy, who played Kris Fisher on the show for four years from 2006 to 2010, said it was an “absolute car crash”.

Posting to X, he said: “The next time a producer/casting director says the words ‘but they have a big social media following’…. Just point them in the direction of this absolute car crash! It’s a simple idea: stop giving actors’ jobs to models / reality tv contestants / pop stars from 1995 / Crufts winners / anybody else who is not an actor. THEY WILL BE SH***.”
