Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) played a huge part in Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) warming to Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) in Wednesday night’s Coronation Street.
We know that Kit is very reluctant to build a relationship with Bernie because of the anger he feels surrounding her decision to put him up for adoption. While Kit has chosen to stay out of his biological mother’s way, the situation is a little different when it comes to Paul and Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell).
After lying to Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) so he didn’t have to attend a family dinner earlier in the week, Kit decided to ease his guilt by hanging out with Paul tonight.
Before long, Paul was using his Eyegaze machine to communicate with Kit and ask him why he’s still struggling to spend time with Bernie.
Kit revealed that sometimes, he isn’t a nice person and doesn’t know how to feel something positive towards his mum.
Because he was uncomfortable with how vulnerable he had become, Kit snapped and said Paul’s speech machine was a good use of ’emotional manipulation’.
Suddenly, the situation changed due to Paul struggling to breathe.
Kit immediately went into a panic and called Bernie and the emergency services.
When Bernie arrived, she was calm and immediately knew what to do. She grabbed the oxygen machine from the cupboard and put it on Paul. Eventually, this was enough to regulate his breathing so the ambulance wasn’t needed.
Stunned at Bernie’s approach and how he fell into a panic, Kit wasn’t sure how to deal with what he was feeling.
Later, he found himself at the Winter/Brown household. At first, Bernie – who was in tears and overwhelmed – thought Kit had arrived to speak to Gemma.
To Bernie’s surprise, she worked out that Kit was there to see her. After opening up about Paul dying, she asked why Kit had visited.
Kit told his mum he wasn’t sure. Of course, lack of communication between the two means Kit wasn’t able to tell Bernie he wanted to be there to support her and vice versa – but it was still a huge step.
That afternoon, Kit and Bernie were seen in the pub.
They only managed to respond with ‘yeah, fine’, when they asked each other about work – but it was enough.
That evening, Billy told Paul that Bernie and Kit were in the pub together and he smiled. In Paul’s ideal situation, Kit will build a strong relationship with Bernie before he dies.
While Wednesday night’s scenes seemed small, they were monumental to Paul, Kit and Bernie.
They offered hope.
