Emmerdale fans had mixed emotions after soap star decided to leave the Dales
Emmerdale fans were pleased after Friday’s (17th January) episode when a character bid farewell to the Dales after almost a six year stint in the ITV soap.
Susan Cookson took on the role of Wendy Posner back in 2019 when her character confronted Victoria Sugden who had given birth to her grandson. Wendy has faced a lot of criticism since joining the village as her eldest son Lee raped Victoria.
However, since 2019 Wendy has stayed in the Dales and even started a relationship with long-time Emmerdale favourite Bob Hope. Viewers who have been watching for the last few years may remember that Wendy got into a spot of trouble back in 2021.
It was disclosed that Wendy had hidden her previous criminal convictions meaning she wasn’t actually qualified to be a nurse, thus fans have given her the nickname “fake nurse Wendy”. Fans found out she had concealed her past when former partner Russ reappeared in the village and took her hostage in order to claim his grandson Harry’s inheritance.
It was Dr. Liam Cavanagh who decided to protect Wendy’s secret and allow her to keep working at the village surgery where she’s been ever since. Unfortunately for Wendy, she seems to not have learnt her lesson as recently she’s been found out as the mysterious individual who kept leaking person secrets to the Hotton Courier.
Viewers found out that Wendy was being blackmailed by a journalist who wanted her to share more dirt on her loved ones or her past would also get exposed. In recent episodes, Wendy was responsible for sharing Rhona and Ella’s secrets as front-page gossip.
In Friday’s episode Wendy dropped the bombshell on Bob that she was leaving. She expressed: “I just want to say how desperately sorry I am, and I’m guessing you were too angry yesterday to hear that.”
She added: “I just didn’t want to leave with you hating me.” Earlier on she shared the news with Victoria saying “it’s for the best” as she prepared to move into Luke’s spare room.
Fans of the show expressed their feelings on social media, in an Emmerdale fan group on Facebook one user wrote: “Probably the only one but I actually liked Wendy and will be sorry to see her go. Rather annoyed with Bob but then he always was a weak character.”
Another user added: “I like Wendy sorry to see her go” and a third echoed “Shame, I love Wendy”.
Perhaps more diplomatically, a user penned: “Always sad to see someone leave after so many years. Wasn’t too sure on her character and past/current actions. Mixed feelings.”
However, fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) saw it as a celebratory goodbye. @adjalf1 wrote: “Anthony exposed and Wendy leaving in the same episode?? We are being treated aren’t we!” @1stLadyHooligan added: “hopefully Wendy’s leaving for good!”
Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
