Coronation Street viewers have been expressing their frustrations over a character’s storyline as they claim scriptwriters have ‘abandoned’ it
Coronation Street’s Chesney Winter-Brown, played by Sam Aston, has long struggled to make ends meet for his growing family. His recent woes were compounded when a health inspector ordered his kebab shop to close until manager Dev Alahan sorted out the issues.
While Dev’s other business ventures in Weatherfield mean he won’t be too affected, Chesney is feeling the pinch, having little in the way of savings. This turn of events reminded viewers that Chesney had confided in partner Gemma Winter earlier this year about his dream of opening his own burger joint, ChesBurger, as reported by OK!
A Reddit user noted that Chesney had previously floated the idea of making gourmet burgers to boost his family’s income, but this plot thread was never pursued.
They added: “It would be nice to have a bit of a change of pace for him and Gemma rather than the same, ‘We can’t afford it, but we’ll manage,’ story over and over again.”
Fans flocked to the comments section to express their disappointment that this storyline was never developed, with one commenting: “Chesney was always very entrepreneurial, remember when he had a stall at the market selling dog collars etc? It’s a shame they’ve taken this route of ongoing misery with money. I’d love to see him and Gemma catch a break.”
Coronation Street fans have been airing their grievances about the character arcs in Weatherfield. One viewer remarked, “I think Corrie writers don’t like the characters to have any ambitions, so they keep them in their defined boxes.”, reports the Mirror.
Another enthusiast added their thoughts: “I think this was a bit longer than a few months ago, but I remember the scenes. I guess it was another plot that the scriptwriters abandoned.”
An additional comment from a fan expressed frustration: “That’s what I don’t like! Wouldn’t it be great if Chezburgers took off? ! ” In agreement, someone else mentioned, “It just seems really pointless if they’re not going to follow through with it. It would have been something a bit different rather than the usual struggling financial storyline that’s been going on for years.”
Yet another viewer suggested a return to a classic pairing could liven things up: “Ches and Kirk were always a good double act. It would be good if they could come up with some kind of business that makes a success.”
Viewers are left questioning whether the showrunners will address these concerns or continue to let potential plots dwindle on the popular ITV series.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
