Coronation Street fans have been left stunned as they realised that Bernie Winter star Jane Hazlegrove previously played another role on the cobbles
Coronation Street fans were surprised to discover that Bernie Winter star, Jane Hazlegrove, had previously graced the cobbles in a different role.
Bernie has become a familiar face on the ITV soap since her arrival in 2019, but 56-year-old actress Jane isn’t new to Weatherfield, having appeared there before as a distinct character.
A soap fan took to Reddit to share their revelation: “The same actors in different roles, especially Jane Hazlegrove”, adding: “I know Corrie had many guest roles over the years (or decades) where the same actor had played a different character, but I’ve read recently that Jane Hazlegrove who plays Bernie Winter originally played the Clayton family’s daughter – they were a short-lived family in the mid 80s.”
They pondered: “I think this is the first time a former regular cast member has returned playing a different character. I don’t know if Corrie would have done the same in the past?”, reports Leicestershire Live.
Other viewers were quick to point out that while “Jane however is the first to have appeared in two regular roles”, plenty of cast members in the soap have appeared as minor characters in the past before landing their big role.
Back in 1985, Jane depicted Sue Clayton across 27 episodes. Sue was part of the Clayton clan, including parents Harry and Connie and sister Andrea, residing at number 11 from January to August of that year.
The Clayton family were embroiled in conflict with the Duckworths, escalating when Andrea fell pregnant with Terry Duckworth’s child. Wanting to distance their grandchild from the Duckworth influence, Harry and Connie decided to leave and Paul Clayton was born elsewhere in 1986.
While Sue, employed at Elliston’s Bakery, hoped to remain on Coronation Street, the decision was sadly made to move the family.
Jane recently posted a nostalgic photo from her early days on the soap, captioning it: “Sweet sixteen.. Coronation Street in 1985, Sue Clayton and her big sister Andrea played by the brilliant Caroline ONeil. Cheers Corrie.., bought my driving lessons with this gig! @coronationstreet.”
Sally Dynevor, who portrays Sally Metcalfe, responded with: “Remember it well xxx!” as did Abi Webster’s actress, Sally Carman, with: “Absolutely tremendous.”
A string of fan comments followed, one saying: “You haven’t changed at all great pic”, another expressing surprise: “Wow didn’t know x” and yet another complimenting: “You just look the same, amazing xxx.”
Coronation Street continues on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV and ITV X.
