ITV Coronation Street fans ‘can’t sleep’ as haunting episode sees young character killed off

Coronation Street fans were left devastated after two characters found themselves caught up in a horrifying knife crime storyline on Monday night

Monday’s episode of Coronation Street delivered a shocking twist as a young character was written out in a tragic turn of events.

The ITV soap has been tackling a serious knife crime storyline, working closely with the Ben Kinsella Trust to ensure the plot is portrayed accurately.

In recent episodes, Mason Radcliffe made the brave decision to assist DS Lisa Swain in exposing his villainous brothers, Matty and Logan. After Lisa revealed to Mason that his brothers were responsible for the car accident that killed her wife Becky, he resolved to take action.

He enlisted the help of Dylan Wilson to keep watch while he searched his brothers’ flat. In a fortunate turn of events, Mason found crucial evidence – a WWII helmet – which he promptly handed over to Lisa at the police station.

Lisa passed the evidence onto Kit Green, pointing out it was the item stolen from the crime scene and bore the same ID as the soldier, reports Lancs Live.

Shortly after, Matty and Logan were arrested but requested legal representation. Realising the danger he was in, Mason decided to leave Weatherfield, accepting Stu Carpenter’s job offer in Germany as a chance for a new beginning.

However, Monday night’s episode ended in tragedy when Matty and Logan were released due to insufficient evidence and set out to find their brother. Simultaneously, Mason asked Dylan to assist him in retrieving one last item from the flat before his departure to Germany.

However, his threatening brothers were lying in wait for him and pursued him before brutally assaulting Mason, despite Dylan’s pleas for them to stop. The situation escalated when Dylan pulled out his zombie knife to scare Matty and Logan, but they snatched it from him and used it to stab Mason.

Abi Franklin, whose own son Seb tragically died following an attack in 2021, discovered Mason with a stab wound in the children’s play area and frantically tried to help him. When the ambulance arrived, Dylan informed the paramedics, including Asha Alahan, that Mason had been stabbed by his brothers.

In the ambulance, Betsy Swain held Mason’s hand, with her and Abi doing their utmost to reassure him he would be alright. However, at the hospital, it was sadly announced that Mason had passed away, leaving the cobbles shocked by the tragic news.

Dylan was heartbroken over the incident and confided in his father Sean Tully about what had occurred, omitting the detail that the weapon was actually his own knife.

Sean encouraged his son to report the incident to the police, but with the knife belonging to Dylan, could this lead to consequences for the young man and possibly signal his departure after 17 years on the cobbles?

Taking to Twitter, now X, over the scenes, soap watchers were left sobbing. One person said: “Mason and betsy have me sobbing my heart out #corrie”, a different account put: “That was an outstanding episode. Absolutely heartbroken and distraught, but it’s an issue that needed raising. I can’t stop crying. I’m in absolute floods. #Corrie” while another added: “I don’t know how I’m supposed to sleep after that episode. I actually can’t stop crying. It’s the photo at the end that’s haunting my thoughts. #Corrie.”

Coronation Street is on ITV1 at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on ITV X and STV.
