How Gail Platt was supposed to exit Coronation Street before Sean Wilson quit ITV soap

The whole plot for actress Helen Worth’s departure has been ‘rewritten’ since actor Sean Wilson quit the ITV soap

Gail Platt’s exit from Coronation Street was expected to show heartwarming scenes, but this has now taken a turn, with reports suggesting the storyline has been “rewritten”.

Actress Helen Worth’s departure from the ITV soap after 50 years has been turned upside down following the exit of her co-star Sean Wilson. Only weeks ago, it was confirmed that his character Martin Platt, Gail’s former husband, would make a return for her farewell storyline.

However, now it’s been revealed that Sean is “stepping down for personal reasons”, and his scenes have apparently been scrapped. The original storyline will now not air it’s thought, leaving fans fearing the rewrite could see Gail be killed off.

The news of Sean’s cancelled return has disappointed viewers, who were looking forward to his reappearance after a long absence. Before Corrie officially announced Sean’s return to filming a few weeks ago, there were rumours that Martin would come back into Gail’s life just as she was set to leave.

Speculation was rife that the duo might reconcile and leave Weatherfield together, providing a joyful conclusion for Gail after years of turmoil, and a fitting farewell for actress Helen. Reports hinted at a romantic reunion between Gail and Martin, paving the way for her final exit from the show, reports the Mirror.

With Martin’s comeback now axed, questions arise about the impact on Gail’s storyline. Coronation Street producers have yet to reveal the alterations or how the changes will affect Gail’s planned departure.

It’s believed that the storyline will be or has already been rewritten, and any scenes featuring actor Sean will not be broadcast. This leaves Gail’s fate up in the air, despite filming for her departure having already begun.

Fans are pleading ITV bosses not to write her character out permanently, fearing this could be a possibility following on-set drama. One viewer expressed their concern, saying: “Omg… sounds like maybe Helen has gone to the bosses and said that she doesn’t want to leave this way anymore and now this scares me she’s decided she wants Gail to be killed off instead. I’m actually scared.”

Another fan pleaded: “Dear #Corrie producers…. whatever you do, DO NOT kill off Gail Platt.” A third viewer echoed these sentiments, writing: “I swear if Gail gets killed off,” while a fourth added: “Gail best not be getting killed off.”
