Hollyoaks icon Danny Mac shares concern about returning as Dodger Savage after 10 years

Hollyoaks legend Danny Mac has rejoined the cast of the Channel 4 soap opera as fan favourite Dodger Savage after 10 years away from the fictional village

Danny Mac has admitted that he had reservations about reprising his Hollyoaks role as fan favourite Mark ‘Dodger’ Savage after 10 years away from the village.

Viewers managed to capture a glimpse of the actor’s huge comeback at the end of Wednesday’s (January 8) episode and fans learned more about Dodger’s return during Monday’s (January 13) episode, which is now available to watch on Channel 4.

As well as being an undercover cop, Dodger knows dodgy Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey) sparking speculation among viewers.

Speaking about his return, Danny said: “Dodger is definitely coming in with an agenda of sorts. What I was really worried about, and it was never going to be the case, but coming back as Dodger for three weeks or a few months and it’s just him reacting to stuff but he’s very much on the front foot oppose to the back foot if that makes sense.

“The door has always been open for Dodger to come back thankfully and I’ve always been on and off conversation about a return but there’s never been the right time personally or professionally.

There’s been various times over the years where he could have returned but it feels right now. It’s been 10 years, there’s been some huge changes on the show and I think it’s a really exciting time for him to be back on the scene.”

Lots have changed in the village over the past decade and Jez Blake (Jeremy Blake) certainly has a lot to update Dodger on given that he’s his biological father.

A controversial twist earlier this year confirmed that Patrick – who was thought to be Dodger and Sienna Blake’s (Anna Passey) father – was actually their uncle, meaning that Jez is their dad.

Danny explained: “There’s a lot for us to uncover about him. It feels quite loaded because there’s a lot going on with him so hopefully that will be intriguing for the audience, those who remember him and for the people who even know him.

“I think we’re going to see him with a different energy and in a different light to what we’ve seen of him previously.

“Dodger is going to be intertwined in the darker side of storylines which is something he hadn’t really been involved in.

“He’s been involved in the dramatic stuff but not so much of the darker side and there’s going to be merge of those two words for him now which is fun to play.

It has already been confirmed that Dodger is back dating Maxine Miniver (Nicki Sanderson) and Danny has teased that things may not be as they seem. He said: “It’s been nice to carry on that relationship from the past.

“Again, it’s not what people might necessarily expect. There’s a lot more to all of it than meets the eye which is really fun to play for both out points of viewers, mine and Nicki’s.

“What’s great about him coming in with Maxine is that covers a lot of the basis of what he knows.

“We don’t have to be seen to be telling him everything so we can presume everything Maxine knows Dodger might know but we also have the option to play out some of those notions on screen as well.

“We’ve got the best of both worlds. We can see his reaction to these revelations [Like Jez being his biological dad] or we can assume he already knows It’s feels positive and it’s an exciting time.

“There’s been big changes and on top of that we’ve got the 30th anniversary so it’s all really lovely and I feel really grateful.”

Hollyoaks airs Monday to Wednesday on E4 at 7pm and first look episodes can be streamed Channel 4 from 7am
