Daisy Campbell’s character Amelia has been dragged into the Belle Dingle abuse storyline in recent weeks
Leaving Emmerdale fave Daisy Campbell has opened up on the major soap storyline which she feels has become ‘annoying’ to some viewers.
This year, we’ve seen Tom King’s horrific treatment of partner Belle. The scenes have been so impactful that it they have earned Eden Taylor-Draper, 27, lots of praise.
It has also been acknowledged that the coercion storyline has helped some viewers in abusive relationships speak up. In recent weeks, following the end of Tom and Belle’s relationship, we’ve seen him try to treat Amelia, played by Daisy Campbell, in a similar manner.
Daisy admits this has been hard for some fans to take given what they’d seen Tom inflict on Belle. Speaking at an Emmerdale press event, she admitted: “It is so annoying for the audience. I think she would (Amelia, know better). I’ve had a lot of comments saying that my character is so annoying at the minute for not seeing Tom for who he is.
“I think you forget though it is a story we are trying to tell and he (Tom) is such a manipulator. He knows what he is doing and obviously, he’s done it to Belle, so he can do it to someone else.
“Obviously, Amelia is so much younger, she’s only 18. She’s very vulnerable.” Many Emmerdale fans have been delighted to see evil Tom get his comeuppance. Daisy was asked about her experiences working with Eden and James Chase – who plays Tom King.
Daisy said: “I feel like Eden and I have grown up on the show together. She came in a couple of years before I did. We’ve always been close but never worked together. So, having this was really cool.
“James is so good. Working with Jack (Downham – Emmerdale’s Noah) and James is so different. As Noah is much younger and not as pushy. Whereas, James has had to play this horrible character for a year-and-a-half. I had to do some really intense scenes with him and because my character is so in love with him I had to put a lot on to it.”
Daisy Campbell, 21, has played Amelia Spencer in Emmerdale since 2011 with the acting star growing up on the ITV soap. As reported earlier this year, Emmerdale bosses felt the time was right for Amelia to leave the village.
As Emmerdale spoilers reveal, Amelia announces she’s moving away from the village. Amy throws a last-minute goodbye party for Amelia but she’s gutted when Kerry fails to show up. For her farewell scenes, Daisy was asked about the Dingle Clan’s reaction to Ameila taking daughter Esther out of the village.
Daisy explained: “I think they take it quite well. Especially Lydia as she’s always been a support for Amelia. At first, they are a bit upset as they have always wanted to be part of Esther’s life.”
Daisy added: “I think they are more relieved and happy that Amelia is moving on and that she’s actually doing something for herself. I feel my character hasn’t ever done anything for herself, more for other people, and this is the one thing where she thinks ‘no, I need this’. They are understanding of it.”
We’ll, of course, keep you posted on what is next in Daisy Campbell’s career.
