Emmerdale’s Amelia Spencer has left plenty of fans fuming recently – but now, actress Daisy Campbell has spoken out about the backlash
An Emmerdale star has spoken out about amid viewer backlash about her character.
Actress Daisy Campbell shot to fame playing Amelia Spencer on the ITV soap, appearing for the first time in 2011. And over the years, she’s been involved in several big moments.
Especially at the moment, as she is dating bad guy and abuser Tom King (James Chase). Fans will recall Tom abused his wife Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) earlier this year – with Belle eventually leaving him.
However, Tom has since struck up a romance with Amelia who is 10 years younger than him. He has managed to lure Amelia in, who has vowed to defend Tom no matter what.
And in episodes last week, things took a dramatic turn when Belle attacked Tom with an axe in self-defence. Due to Amelia’s involvement and meddling in Belle and Tom’s drama, fans have been left fuming at the character.
On social media, one person said: “I really don’t like Amelia anymore nasty girl.” While someone else wrote: “She has to be the most infuriating character on the show. Wake up!’
A third chimed in and previously fumed: “I could throw something at the telly… Amelia how annoying.” However, actress Daisy has now spoken out about playing Amelia, revealing the character is “vulnerable.”
“There’s a 10-year age gap between Amelia and Tom and she’s vulnerable,” Daisy told The Mirror recently. She added: “When I think of Amelia, she’s never happy, she’s always got sad storylines and she’s always very vulnerable. I think he’s got her where he wants her – she’s not seeing it right now because he’s an older man.”
The actress then went on to share how Tom should “tread carefully” because “Amelia’s the only one on his side right now.”
Daisy also shared how she hopes Amelia will see Tom’s true colours and said: “I’m reading the scripts and I’m like, ‘Come on, you’ve got to pull through for Belle’. So hopefully we’ll see some of that.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
