Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle breaks character to offer advice in rare touching moment

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was on hand to give some advice to Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale.

A few days ago, Matty’s wife Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) spent time looking after Tracy Metcalfe’s (Amy Walsh) daughter Frankie. It was keeping an eye on the young girl that sparked something inside of her that she hadn’t felt for ages.

Amy was broody – she wanted another child.

Instead of sitting Matty down to discuss this important subject, she developed a plan in tonight’s episode to surprise him.

It involved blindfolding Matty and bringing him into Dale View. When he took the eye mask off, Matty learnt from Amy that she had asked Kim Tate (Claire King) if they could rent the property.

Matty was surprised, pointing out they had already planned to save up enough money for a deposit on a house to buy instead.

An overexcited Amy then said they could move into Dale View, and have a baby.

Matty was totally taken aback. The awkward silence filled the room and Amy recognised her partner wasn’t exactly on board.

He gave himself space to think by heading back to Butlers. There, Cain was making a tea and as he sat down, Matty started to talk.

He told Cain that the prospect of having children is terrifying. He felt there was an awful lot to think about anyways, but given he is trans, it appeared there was another complicated part to ponder over.

Cain listened to Matty, and responded in a way that helped him see the situation with less panic. He said that Amy and Matty are entitled to having children, just like everybody else, and he mustn’t sacrifice his own happiness over something that ‘might not even happen’.

Despite Matty’s fears, he understood what Cain was saying. It was a touching moment between the two characters, which also gave Matty food for thought.

What will he say to Amy next?

‘We work with the kids and we work with the animals. When we work with the animals I start wondering if I should get a dog and I end up dog-sitting because I think the nice thing about that is you can give them back’, Natalie Ann Jamieson said recently, reflecting on her own view on working with children and animals, as well as parenthood.

‘And I still kind of feel that way about kids at the moment! I like having my friends’ kids and I love being around kids and playing with them. It’s lovely spending a day with a kid, they’re so uplifting.

‘Being childlike and free and playing games, I love all that. But then the responsibility part of it – I don’t know if I’m quite there yet.’
