Emmerdale’s Matty Barton has been left devastated following the tragic death of his wife Amy – but fans believe that he could be set for a new romance with a surprising character
Emmerdale fans reckon they’ve sussed out who Matty Barton’s new romantic interest could be after the heart-wrenching loss of his wife Amy.
Since his arrival in 2018, Matty (played by Ash Palmisciano) has become a staple on the ITV soap, engaging in numerous major plots as Moira’s (Natalie J. Robb) son. His journey has been anything but dull, with storylines ranging from an unexpected prison sentence to his endearing union with Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson).
The recent episodes have been particularly poignant, following last month’s shocking demise of Amy, a twist that left viewers stunned. As fans will remember, Amy was among several villagers caught in the limousine that plunged into a frozen lake.
She initially survived the crash but, in scenes that tugged at the heartstrings, later passed away in hospital. The tragedy also claimed the lives of Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) and Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough).

In the wake of Amy’s death, a grief-stricken Matty has found support from her mother Kerry (Laura Norton), reports Leicestershire Live. Amy’s funeral last week brought together many loved ones to honour her memory. During the service, Matty delivered an emotional eulogy, calling Amy his “soulmate”.
Overcome with emotion while reciting a poem, Matty was unable to continue, prompting Kerry to step in and finish the reading. Emmerdale fans are now buzzing with speculation over a potential shock new romance for Matty, and it’s with an unexpected character – Kerry.

Chatter among fans on an Emmerdale Facebook fan page suggests a ‘moment’ was caught between the two characters. One viewer suggested, “Anyone else catch vibes between Matty and Kerry?” This sentiment was mirrored by others, with another fan posting, “Yes! Watch this space I reckon.”
The conversation continued to gather momentum as a third added, “I thought that as well. Definitely a spark but I hope I’m wrong!” Another person shared their apprehension about the pairing: “I really hope they don’t put them together!” Social media is abuzz with these whispers of uncertain future storylines for both characters.
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
