Ruby arrived in the village earlier this year as the wife of Caleb and now her mum’s set to appear
Emmerdale has confirmed Ruby Fox-Milligan’s mum will soon be making an appearance on screen. Ruby arrived in the village earlier this year as the estranged wife of Caleb Milligan and mother to their son Nicky.
The father and son duo arrived has already arrived in the fictional Yorkshire village back in 2022 in a ploy to try and fleece Kim Tate of Home Farm, which Caleb believed to be his birth right as he was revealed to be the son of Kim’s ex Frank Tate and the late Dingle matriarch Faith Dingle.
But Ruby’s arrival quickly ruffled feathers – particularly among the Dingles after she got a of the green-eyed monster when exposing her husband’s affair with his nephew’s wife Tracy Robinson. More recently, Ruby has found herself at loggerheads with Moira Dingle resulting in an almost-deadly barn fire.
Attentions, however, are soon going to be turned back onto Ruby and Celeb with details about their past set to be exposed thanks to the arrival of Ruby’s mum Helen, played by Sharon Maughan, who has not seen her daughter in 30 years.
But Helen has a reason for her wanting to reconnect with her estranged daughter – she’s dying. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News and other press, Caleb actor William Ash revealed that Helen and her husband cut Rub out of their lives as they did not approve of her relationship with Caleb.
He explained: “They hated him because he’d come out of a care home, he didn’t have any family and thought he was beneath their daughter. So, Helen was really snobby and judgemental. Helen and Ruby’s dad gave Ruby an ultimatum. They basically said ‘look if you want to be with this boy then we don’t want anything to do with you’. They basically just cut Ruby dead.
Set to get in between their potential reunion, William shared: “Because she’s been so manipulative and behaved terribly in the past, he just doesn’t trust anything that she’d ever say.
“He decides to go just to see what she actually wants – because if she is on her deathbed, then maybe Ruby does need some kind of closure and there’s a potential for sorting it out. As it turns out, that’s not what happens…”
Helen will be played by Sharon Maughan. The 74-year-old will be recognisable to many as part of the 1980s advertisement featuring the ‘Gold Blend couple’ advertising the Nescafé instant coffee. She is also married to actor Trevor Eve and has appeared in TV shows Casualty, Heartbeat, Inspector Morse and Murder, She Wrote. as well as film The Bank Job.
Discussing working with Sharon, will said: “She is an amazing actress because she only comes in for two episodes. We only had a day filming. We were doing all these intense scenes together in a hospital room, in a private hospital, just me and her going at each other really.
“She was amazing. It is hard to come into any show, to just do one day, and have lots of intense scenes. But she was fantastic and really a force of nature really.”
When meeting up with Helen, the pair argue and with both unwilling to back down, Caleb strikes a deal with Helen to bring Ruby to see her if she sends him £100,000. Later, Ruby’s suspicious of Caleb’s late arrival home and he’s left battling his guilt over the deal he’s made with Ruby’s terminally ill mother but doesn’t mention it.
But what will happen if Ruby finds out about? Will explained: “I think he knows that if she finds out he’s been to see Helen and he’s gone behind her back, she will be furious. There will be a real question of whether she can trust him ever again. The stakes are massive in that moment.”
