EastEnders confirms ‘explosive’ and ‘bonkers’ 40th anniversary as boss reveals what to expect

EastEnders is pulling out all the stops to make the 40th anniversary one to remember, with star Adam Woodyatt branding the plans for the upcoming milestone ‘bonkers’.

The BBC One soap will celebrate 40 years of drama in February and fans couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store.

Much of the plans are being kept under wraps for the time being, though reports have confirmed that The Queen Vic will be blown up.

There will also be a history-making live element of the milestone week that will allow viewers to vote on the outcome of one particular storyline.

Other than that, there isn’t much known as of yet but fans can be sure that it will be unmissable, with EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw teasing what’s to come.

‘I can’t say too much, but it’s explosive,’ he said. ‘Apart from the live episode, we’ve pretty much shot most of it. It’s looking brilliant. Expect everything!’

Ian Beale star Adam Woodyatt elaborated on Chris’ comments, saying that viewers should ‘expect everything and more!’.’

‘The anniversary week is bonkers,’ he enthused. ‘I think I can safely say for all of us, we picked up the scripts and said, “What the f—?!”

‘It was literally “How the hell are we going to do this?” and we have. It is honestly brilliant.’

Consider us very intrigued.

In the meantime, fans can expect a festive season of epic proportions as Cindy Beale’s (Michelle Collins) affair with Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) looks set to be exposed.

Discussing the storyline in question, Chris said: ‘We did the format-breaking episode last year with the flashforward and The Six, so this year -because we are entering the 40th year – it was really important for us to have a classic EastEnders episode.’

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
