EastEnders’ Cindy Beale ‘revealed’ as shooter in dark 40th anniversary twist

EastEnders fans are convinced that history is about to repeat itself on the soap

EastEnders fans have been left on tenterhooks after Wednesday’s explosive episode (January 29) saw Cindy Beale (played by Michelle Collins) cook up a potentially lethal plan.

Earlier this week, the plot thickened as it emerged that Gina Knight (portrayed by Francesca Henry) was the one who lobbed a brick through Cindy’s window alongside a menacing threat aimed at her mum.

Gina desperately pleaded with Cindy to believe that she wasn’t the attacker over the festive period, but when pushed to spill her whereabouts, Gina hesitated. Yet under the threat of police involvement, she crumbled, admitting she spent Christmas night with none other than Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier), leaving her sister Anna (Molly Rainford) heartbroken.

But the drama in Albert Square didn’t stop there when Anna and Gina had a full-on scrap about Freddie, culminating in Anna spilling the beans about stashing away the shovel that struck Cindy.

Visibly shaken and fearing for her life, Cindy hotfooted it to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) to ask for a gun. Although Phil swerved the request, eagle-eyed Cindy clocked the code to his safe – a move that could spell trouble in future scenes.

EastEnders buffs reckon Cindy might be lining up Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) in her crosshairs once more. In 1996, Cindy hired a hitman to shoot her husband Ian, but the bullet only grazed him and he survived while Cindy went to prison for the crime, reports Plymouth Live.

With the soap gearing up for its 40th anniversary next month, fans are already speculating over fate’s potentially cruel repeat.

One viewer shared: “Cindy using ‘self defence’ to get a gun. Remember the last time she was got hold of a gun. Ian got shot. #Eastenders @bbceastenders.” Another recalled: “The last time Cindy had a gun, she tried to shoot Ian #EastEnders.”

Another fan, joining in the conversation, added: “#EastEnders Cindy claims she’s never been violent, forgetting about Ian being shot!”

“Brilliant line there from Cindy as I watch last night’s #EastEnders – ‘I’ve never been violent’. Getting Ian shot was pure benevolence, then?” remarked another soap enthusiast.

EastEnders airs Monday – Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer
