Coronation Street’s Gail Platt is set to leave the cobbles after 50 years, with it recently being reported that she is set to tie the knot for the seventh time
Corrie fans think they’ve cracked the code on who Gail Platt will really end up marrying before her grand exit – and it’s not her latest flame Jesse Chadwick.
Icon Helen Worth, who plays the Weatherfield regular Gail, is set to bid farewell to the cobbles after a whopping 50 years. Her much-anticipated departure was outed back in June, with plans initially set for Gail to exit alongside her ex-hubby Martin Platt (played by Sean Wilson).
However, reports emerged that despite Sean filming for weeks, he had left the soap. As a result, bosses called in John Thomson, known as Jesse, to return to the drama for Gail’s goodbye. Jesse popped back on screen this week, revealing a past holiday fling with Gail in Thailand.
Gail’s clan were not happy about their rekindled love, but she was having none of it, clearly besotted with Jesse. And if the gossip mills are churning out truth, Gail’s adieu might just include wedding bells for her seventh stroll down the aisle, reports the Liverpool Echo.
A source told The Sunday People, saying: “The wedding scenes are being filmed and when they air, viewers will be gripped. As with any soap wedding, they will have to wait and see whether Gail makes it down the aisle or not.”
Gail has been hitched to a string of hubbies, including Brian Tilsley (Christopher Quinten) – whom she married twice – Martin Platt, Richard Hillman (Brian Capron), Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale), and Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis).
While the obvious guess might be Jesse as her next groom, some eagle-eyed soap fans on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page reckon they’ve cracked that Gail will not be marrying him. One soap sleuth posted: “Does Gail really need to be married again.”
A fellow Corrie buff speculated: “What if all along Martin Platt is coming back and that’s who we see waiting for her at the wedding.” Another jumped aboard saying: “Yes! I was sad he never came back.” There’s also talk about a shock twist, with a viewer declaring: “Now this would be a twist.”
Some fans are casting doubt over the shifty Jesse being Mr Right, with one writing: “I don’t think it’s Jesse. He’s too shifty and she’s supposed to be getting her happy ending? ” Another penned: “Yeah he’s definitely up to something.”
Helen, meanwhile, has announced her adieu, stating earlier this year: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”
“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
