While there may be drama on the cobbles in every episode, viewers have been left bemused after an old plot has been rediscovered weeks after it was last broadcast on the show
Coronation Street fans have been left confused after uncovering a “missing” storyline from the show.
The soap is known for seeing drama darken the cobbles every episode on ITV, with fans gripped by the latest dramatic storylines. However, viewers were bemused when they remembered a large storyline in recent weeks had just been forgotten about.
In recent weeks, fans have watched in desperation as Chesney Winter-Brown, played by Sam Aston, struggles to keep himself and his family afloat. He was dealt a major blow when boss Dev Alahan, played by Jimmi Harkishin, was told to close the kebab shop by a health inspector until further notice.
Though this may not affect Dev too much, Chesney’s family has been hit with a devastating setback. In heart-wrenching scenes that left viewers on the edge of tears, Chesney was seen sobbing as he saw the scale of his financial woes and what he could do to bring his family out of debt.
This left fans rallying behind Chesney, but others were confused as the storyline reminded them of another plot that had been touched on. In a previous episode, Chesney admitted to wife Gemma that he always wanted to own his own burger place, which he branded ChesBurger.
Taking to the soap’s Reddit page, one user recalled how Chesney had hoped to make gourmet burgers as another form of income for his growing family. But the account revealed that after the confession, his aspirations have not been brought up since.
“It would be nice to have a bit of a change of pace for him and Gemma rather than the same, ‘We can’t afford it, but we’ll manage,’ story over and over again,” the viewer penned. Many fans were shocked as they realised the storyline was never pursued, but offered their hopes to writers that his dream could come true.
One user, replying to the original post, said: “Chesney was always very entrepreneurial, remember when he had a stall at the market selling dog collars etc? It’s a shame they’ve taken this route of ongoing misery with money; I’d love to see him and Gemma catch a break.”
A second disgruntled viewer took to social media to vent their frustrations: “I think this was a bit longer than a few months ago, but I remember the scenes. I guess it was another plot that the scriptwriters abandoned.”
Meanwhile, a third questioned mentioning Chesney’s dream in the first place: “It just seems really pointless if they’re not going to follow through with it. It would have been something a bit different rather than the usual struggling financial storyline that’s been going on for years.”
It comes as the soap continues to be hit by criticism from fans about the lack of development in each of the characters on the show. With Weatherfield with a number of dramatic plots, fans have pleaded with bosses to give the resident of Britain’s most famous street some more drive and ambition.
Coronation Street airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
