Coronation Street has confirmed the return of a soap legend – and fans are convinced that another icon could be making a comeback to the cobbles very soon
Corrie’s confirmed the comeback of a soap legend – and fans reckon another Weatherfield icon might be hot on their heels.
Soap stalwart Eileen Grimshaw, played by Sue Cleaver, first strutted onto the cobbles in 2000. As head honcho of the Grimshaw household, Eileen’s won over viewers throughout her time on the Street.
But earlier this year, Eileen waved goodbye to Weatherfield for sunnier skies in Thailand after her son Jason Grimshaw (actor Ryan Thomas) had a nasty moped prang that left him with a broken back.
Eileen’s departure seemed to sync up with Sue’s new gig away from the soap. Earlier this year, she appeared in Sister Act: The Musical on a UK tour. Plus, she also joined ITV’s Loose Women as a panelist, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Yet, in Wednesday’s episode (September 18), Corrie dropped a major update about Eileen and her son Jason. George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), Eileen’s other half, revealed to Todd (Gareth Pierce) that Jason’s bounced back quicker than expected and Eileen’s on her way home.
The fanbase went into meltdown over the news of Eileen’s return, and with Jason fighting fit, there’s chatter he might pop back too. Social media’s buzzing, with one fan posting: “Jason mention! Hope he comes back with his mum.”
Another chimed in: “It’s been so long! ” When Sue clocked off earlier this year, she nattered on Lorraine about her role and if it was curtains for her Corrie days.
Sue confirmed shell be returning to the beloved soap, spilling: “Yes absolutely. I have a few months grace to do this job and then I will be back in there as soon as I finish.” This isn’t the first time her character Eileen has taken a hiatus from the street. Back in 2022, Sue had a spell away when she entered the jungle for I’m A Celebrity.
In other news, ex-Corrie star Ryan Thomas, known for his role as Jason Grimshaw, hasn’t been seen on the cobbles since 2016. Joining the show in 2000, he quickly turned into a heartthrob with his string of intense love affairs and dramatic storylines.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
