Coronation Street’s Peter Ash breaks silence after emotional NTA win alongside rarely-seen girlfriend

The actor was reunited with his castmates for the star-studded event just days after his exit aired in the ITV soap

Coronation Street star Peter Ash has broken his social media silence after an emotional win at the National Television Awards. The actor was reunited with his castmates for the star-studded event just days after his exit aired in the ITV soap.

As fans of the programme will know, Peter bowed out of the programme after six years of playing Paul Foreman. The character tragically passed away 17 months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in a hard-hitting storyline Corrie worked on with he help of the MND Association.

Bernie Winter and Summer Spellman were with Paul when his health took a sudden turn as he started struggling to breathe. The pair called for an ambulance and Paul was rushed to the hospital where Bernie, Summer and Paul’s sister Gemma Winter-Brown were soon told by doctors there was nothing more they could do and they headed in to say their emotional goodbyes to Paul.

But in a tragic turn of events, Paul’s husband Billy Mayhew didn’t make it to the hospital in time to fulfil his promise of being by Paul’s side when the time came. Viewers saw Paul had already passed as Summer got Billy, who was running to the hospital after a series of unfortunate events, on the phone.

Paul’s mum Bernie encouraged Billy to say what he needed to Paul while Summer and Gemma watched on with devastation, leaving Billy thinking he’d only managed to say he loved him one last time over the phone. However, Corrie viewers know this is a lie and Pual had tragically already passed away.

Days after the tear-jerking scenes and Peter was reunited with his castmates as they descended on the capital for the awards bash. And it ended up being a big night for the soap star as he scooped an award. He picked up silverware for his portrayal of Paul Foreman on the cobbles in the Serial Drama Performance category, days after his final scenes aired.

As he collected the award, Peter said it was an “amazing way” to end his time on the soap opera. His heartbreaking exit storyline saw his character Paul’s health deteriorate as he battled with motor neurone disease (MND), before dying from the disease in tear-jerking scenes this week.

He said: “This is honestly incredible – what an amazing way to end my six years on Coronation Street.” He also thanked the Corrie team and the charities which supported him, paying special tributes to on-screen mum Jane Hazlegrove, who plays Bernie, and Daniel Brocklebank, who plays his partner Billy.

Big thanks to the whole team at @coronationstreet and @mndassoc.”

And his co-stars were quick to heap praise. Paddy Bever (Max Turner) said: “So well deserved!” Harriet Bibby (Summer) replied: “Proud of you.” Emrhys Cooper (Rowan Cunliffe) shared: “Congratulations! So happy for you buddy.” Tony Maudsley (George Shuttleworth) added: “Brilliant!!! 100% deserved!!”
