It’s been revealed that his character Mason Radclife will be the victim of a horrifying stabbing carried out by his brothers
Coronation Street star Luca Toolan has told how he co-stars gave him a ‘bit of grief’ behInd the scenes as they prepared to film their shocking new storyline.
It’s been revealed that his character Mason Radclife will be the victim of a horrifying stabbing carried out by his brothers. As fans of the ITV soap, Matty and Logan have proven to be quite the troublesome duo since their first appearances on the cobbles.
However, they’re set to ramp things up a gear when the track down Mason, who has helped DS Lisa Swain after she believed Matty and Logan were involved in the death of her late partner, Becky, while on duty.
Corrie fans will see Mason making plans to leave Weatherfield to escape his brothers, Matty and Logan. When Abi Webster catches Mason in her son Seb Franklin’s memorial garden stealing some heather for Betsy, she tears a strip off him and sends him packing.
Later, Betsy is scathing when Mason says he had nothing to do with the death of Lisa Swain’s late partner, Becky, and after she and her husband, Tim Metcalfe, tried to take Mason under their wing, Sally Metcalfe tries to get through to Betsy about how hard it was for him to call the police on his own family.
Meanwhile, Mason apologises to Liam Connor for the bullying before heading back to the precinct with Dylan Wilson. After being quizzed by DC Kit Green about the WWII Helmet, Matty and Logan come looking for their brother. Finding Dylan and Mason, the brothers give chase and catch Mason before viciously attacking him.
As Dylan makes his escape, he screams at them to stop, but to no avail. Abi then finds Mason bleeding from a stab wound in the children’s play area. She pulls off her scarf and does her best to stem the flow of blood whilst shouting for help. The ambulance arrives and Dylan explains to Asha Alhan how Mason has been stabbed by his brothers, Matty and Logan, using a zombie knife.
Asked about filming the stabbing scenes, Luca has revealed: “Oh, that was intense, really intense. I worked my butt off for that and just prepared and prepared and prepared. We had a vision of it being somewhat like the Saving Private Ryan scene. It was very well written in the script. I did a lot of research on that to see how you would breathe, what the symptoms of that would be, how it would look.
“And then I was just researching different things like: ‘Does it hurt to get stabbed?’ Surprisingly, a lot of the information that I was reading was that you don’t feel it, which spooked me, but then that changes the way that you play it, because it’s more of shock and focus on the breath, as opposed to screaming and agony.”
He added: “Everyone on set was just incredible. It was the best crew, director, environment, makeup team – shout out to Helen and Lorraine. Every single person involved was on their A-game. It was really epic to be involved in.”
On being able to play Mason’s softer side in recent scenes, Luca shared: “Oh, it’s been ace. It’s been really nice, because it started off as quite a secluded role in that you didn’t really get to interact with many of the characters on the street. When I was doing the bullying storyline, it was just pure horror and vulgar behaviour, so to go from that to actually pushing yourself a little bit more and trying to show some vulnerability, develop relationships and have some depth to the character has been so fun.
“Also, to actually interact with other cast members and form some bonds with like Sally Dynevor and Vicky Myers was an amazing experience and I’ve had an absolute blast with them, they’ve mentored me and taught me a lot.”
Asked how he gets on with actors Seamus McGoff and Harry Lowbridge, who play Matty and Logan, Luca added: “Well, those two are crazy on screen and off screen, they’re good crazy, though, and we have such a strong bond that, similarly to myself and Charlie, where we can push the boundaries, and we do push it.
“There were times where off screen they were giving me a bit of grief and would be getting in my face and whatnot, just to help create that energy so that you’ve got a take off, you’ve got a runway before action. So, yeah, there was a little bit of that going on.”
