Is it really over?
Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Dev Alahan and Bernie Winter have been left devastated by their split in Coronation Street.
It has been a rough few weeks for Dev, as the Prima Doner was temporarily shut down by a health inspector in a surprise visit while manager Chesney was away from the store.
Dev’s decision not to pay Chesney during the month-long shutdown put him on the outs with Bernie, since her son-in-law would have to take a minimum-wage delivery job on a zero-hours contract.
Dev was hoping to make things right with Bernie in Wednesday’s (October 30) episode, with his daughter Asha suggesting a grand romantic gesture may fix things.
The Alahans eventually turned up at Gemma and Chesney’s birthday party for the quads but got a frosty reception from Bernie. Little did Bernie know that Dev brought an engagement ring with him.
Dev tried to lighten up the party’s atmosphere by performing a balloon animal trick for the kids, even roping in a reluctant Bernie to assist him.
This balloon trick culminated in Dev dropping to one knee to propose marriage to Bernie in front of everyone. A shocked Bernie walked out rather than answer him.
Dev trailed Bernie to the Rovers, where he apologised for the bad timing of his proposal. He then swore he’d just wanted to prove how much he loved Bernie.
Bernie was unwilling to take Dev back, telling him: “I think we should call it quits.”
Later, the Alahan kids were shown comforting Dev over the break-up while Bernie cried alone No. 5 as she clutched her late son Paul’s hoodie.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
