Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney attempts to justify character’s evil Ken Barlow plot

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has opened up about her character Cassie Plummer’s evil plot to ‘bump off’ Ken Barlow as she tries to justify the poisoning.

Coronation Street actress Claire Sweeney has attempted to defend her character’s questionable deeds, which include plotting against the much-loved Ken Barlow.

Claire’s on-screen persona Cassie Plummer, a former drug addict who has been stirring up quite a storm since her arrival in Weatherfield, is seemingly taking her scheming to alarming new heights by attempting to “bump off” the unsuspecting Ken.

Since suffering a fall, Cassie has interestingly been playing the role of Ken Barlow’s (portrayed by William Roach) caregiver.

The pair have grown close over the past months, but Ken remains oblivious to Cassie’s sinister plan to con him out of his money, not realising that his trusted companion has been lacing his drinks with crushed tablets.

During her appearance on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Weekend on Sunday, March 16th, Claire was presented with a clip from the iconic soap opera where Cassie added crushed tablets to Ken’s drink.

Alan remarked: “Little does he [Ken] know what’s in his cup!”

To which Claire responded: “I know, I’m the smiling assassin there, aren’t I? I mean, Ken Barlow, a national treasure!”

Alan commented: “And you to bump him off Claire,” leading the 53-year-old actress to elaborate on her position within the show’s narrative.

Claire said: “Well, do you know what, I mean, you can’t soften it can you when you’re spiking a national treasure’s cup of tea.

“But that was a tablet there and then I go on to [use] antihistamines with him.”

Alan was taken aback, uttering a shocked “gosh” as Claire reiterated: “So it’s just really to keep him a little bit sleepy so he needs me. That’s what it is.”

The presenter, with a chuckle, slid his cup away from Sweeney and quipped: “I’m just going to put my tea out of your way!”

Towards the interview’s conclusion, Alan slyly probed Claire for any insider knowledge on Ken’s fate, asking, “I don’t know whether you’ll be bumping anybody else off or succeed in bumping Ken and I don’t suppose you know either and if you did, you wouldn’t tell me would you?”

However, fans were left hanging as the actress confessed: “I don’t know. Surprise a minute isn’t it?”

This leaves viewers questioning whether this spells the end for Ken, or if Claire’s actions will catch up with her, resulting in her downfall.

Coronation Street is available to watch on ITV and ITVX.
