The character is set to stand trial for the murder of Joel Deering in the ITV soap
Coronation Street star Cait Fitton has warned fans about the outcome of Lauren Bolton’s court case as she prepares to stand trial for the murder of Joel Deering.
As fans of the ITV soap know, Weatherfield’s biggest-ever whodunnit was seen coming to a dramatic end back in November as Joel’s killer was revealed – and it was a joint effort to off the dastardly solicitor.
Joel had arrived onto the cobbles in September 2023 as a charming solicitor who Dee-Dee soon fell head over heels in love with. But under his smooth exterior Joel was hiding a dark secret – a penchant for younger, underprivileged girls, linking him to a troubled Lauren.
Joel later left Lauren for dead following a vicious attack and while Roy Cropper was accused of the crime, Joel did everything possible to cover his tracks. It was Joel’s fiancée Dee-Dee who finally uncovered the horrific truth, however, without hard evidence the police were forced to let him walk free.
Having drugged Lauren in an attempt to abort his own son, Joel became public enemy number one and as Dee-Dee, Lauren and DS Lisa Swain all rallied to bring him down it was no surprise when Joel disappeared. But when his body was found following an apparent suicide, the police soon discovered that someone had in fact murdered Joel.
It was confirmed he’d been killed with a heavy weapon before entering the water and several Weatherfield residents were put in the frame – Dee-Dee, her father Ed, her uncle Ronnie, Mason Radcliffe, Lisa, Carla Connor, DC Kit Green and finally Max Turner and Lauren Bolton.
It was then revealed that in an eventful night for Joel, after Ronnie and Edwent after him with a crowbar, he was attacked by scorned ex Dee-Dee, threatened by Kit and pushed into the river by Max. But not before Lauren had delivered the killer blow amidst their train track confrontation.
Max later confessed to the murder, until Shona and David Platt discovered Max was covering for Lauren and shopped her to the police where she pleaded self defence.
During Wednesday night’s (January 15) trip to the cobbles, Max visited Lauren to find her panicking about her trial. Max did his best to be positive, but Lauren could see straight through his platitudes. Lauren stealed herself and tells Max that it’s best they call it a day as he’s got his whole life ahead of him while she’s looking at a 20 year stretch, leaving him devastated.
On Friday night (January 17) Corrie fans will see Lauren’s trial start. Lauren listens as the prosecution barrister addresses the court. The prosecution barrister describes Joel’s death to the court and paints Lauren as a liar. As the prosecution and defence go back and forth Lauren, Bobby and Nina Lucas watch the proceedings with mixed emotions. Later, having returned to the prison, Lauren’s barrister warns her that the case could go either way.
Speaking in an Instagram Q&A about the court scenes, Lauren actress Cait revealed that things are going to get emotional. Asked what it was like to film the scenes, the soap star said: “For me, it was quite an experience,’ she wrote. ‘It felt terrifyingly real, which for an actor is great. It was intense but super fun being on location as always. I’m really excited for you guys to watch!”
When fan suggested it was going to be emotional, Cait shared a selfie from filming and warned fans: “Get yout tissues ready,” as she also described the scenes with a single tear emoji, a face hiding behind their hands emoji and a strong bicep emoji.
Elsewhere in the chat, Cait was also asked what it’s like working with a baby with Lauren welcoming her son, Frankie, last year. “I absolutely love working with Roman. He is a true natural, a star in the making. Working with a baby adds a different dynamic and with Lauren being a parent it’s helped bring her softer side to light.”
