Coronation Street stars Daniel Brocklebank and Peter Ash have come together with a plea to fans as viewers saw their time on-screen together come to an emotional end.
There were heart-wrenching scenes in the ITV soap earlier this week as 17 months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease Paul Foreman, played by Peter, tragically died.
Billy, played by Danie, was unaware that his husband was slipping away after a drunken night out led to him losing his phone and going on a mission to find it – and the memories contained in it – when his husband’s health took a turn for the worse.
Bernie Winter and Summer Spellman were with Paul when his health took a sudden turn and when he started struggling to breathe, the pair called for an ambulance.
While Billy was still out desperately looking for his lost phone with the help of David Platt, Paul was rushed to the hospital where Bernie, Summer and Paul’s sister Gemma Winter-Brown were soon told by doctors there was nothing more they could do and they headed in to say their emotional goodbyes to Paul.
But in a tragic turn of events, Billy didn’t make it to the hospital in time to fulfil his promise of being by Paul’s side when the time came. Viewers saw, Paul had already passed as Summer got Billy, who was running to the hospital after getting trapped in traffic in Frescho’s car park, on the phone.
Paul’s mum Bernie encouraged Billy to say what he needed to Paul while Summer and Gemma watched on with devastation, leaving Billy thinking he’d only managed to say he loved him one last time over the phone.
Following the episode, on Tuesday (September 10), Daniel shared a joint post with Peter to Instagram in which they asked for support in continuing their fight to one day find a cure for MND and in the meantime, support the MND community however they can.
Alongside a picture of the pair during one of their fundraising efforts, Daniel wrote: “As our Coronation Street MND storyline comes to an end, banging that MND drum, raising awareness and much needed funds remains as ever important. If you can please help.”
And they were quickly shown support. @thebeckstar_89 said: “Donated. Well done for delivering such an incredible story which was heartbreaking but done with so much respect & compassion. We’ll miss Paul, Hope Billy will be ok.” @amalou6575 commented: “It’s amazing thing you and peter r doing I definitely share this and of course support MND association.”
@sharonjrobinson shared: “@danielbrocklebank my lovely dad passed from this horrible horrible disease – Thankyou both and @coronationstreet for making awareness.” @x_.carlajones._x added: “Donated. What a phenomenal episode last night!! Well done to you all.”
