Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has shared the ‘real ending’ for Billy Mayhew and Paul Foreman following the latter’s heartbreaking death.

There were tear-jerking scenes in the ITV soap on Monday night (September 9) as 17 months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease Paul, played by Peter Ash, tragically died.

There was jeopardy for Paul’s family at the end as Billy Mayhew was unaware that his husband was slipping away after a drunken night out led to him losing his phone and going on a mission to find it – and the memories contained on it – when his husband’s health took a turn for the worse.

It was Bernie Winter and Summer Spellman who were with Paul when his health took a sudden turn for the worse and was struggling to breathe, leading to the pair calling for an ambulance while Billy Mayhew was out desperately looking for his lost phone.

Back at the hospital, Bernie, Summer and Paul’s sister Gemma Winter-Brown headed in to say their emotional goodbyes to Paul with Billy still trying to make it to the hospital in time.

But in a tragic turn of events, Billy didn’t make it to the hospital in time to fulfil his promise of being by Paul’s side when the time came, thinking he’d only managed to say he loved him one last time over the phone.

However, as viewers of the ITV soap know, Paul had already passed as Summer Spellman got Billy, who was running to the hospital after getting trapped in traffic in Frescho’s car park, on the phone. Paul’s mum Bernie encouraged Billy to say what he needed to Paul while Summer and Gemma watched on with devastation.

Following the final scenes, in which Billy arrived at the hospital to find Paul had already gone before scooping him up into his arms, Daniel Brocklebank, who plays the archdeacon, took to social media to share the moment he and Peter shared a moving moment together after filming ended.

The pair could be seen in what appeared to be their dressing room, with Pete still wearing Paul’s hospital gown. They were seen in a tight embrace with a picture frame on the floor full of snaps, seemingly for Peter to take with him. Captioning the post, Daniel wrote: “Goodbye my friend. It’s been an honour and a privilege. Let’s keep banging that #MND drum loud and clear.”

Peter himself was quick to comment on his former co-star’s post, writing: “Amen. A pleasure and a privilege, my friend.” His Corrie co-stars were also keen to respond to the post with Toyah Habeeb actress Georgia Taylor posting: “Stunning work from you all love. You should be so proud.”
