Coronation Street star breaks silence as Joel’s killer unmasked with ‘justice served’

Coronation Street’s Calum Lill has shared his reaction to Joel Deering’s real killer, as Lauren Bolton was confirmed to have murdered the character on the ITV soap

Coronation Street’s Joel Deering actor Calum Lill had plenty to say about his character’s gruesome death on the ITV soap, and his reaction to the killer being unmasked.

After weeks of hints over who killed Joel, the suspects saw their real movements on that fateful night aired one by one. Soon viewers uncovered who was really involved in Joel’s death, and who dealt the fatal blow that killed him.

Despite several people being after him or confronting him that night, and Dee-Dee Bailey actually attacking him, it was Lauren Bolton who was announced as his killer. She wasn’t alone at the scene of the crime though, as her boyfriend Max Turner also had a part to play.

Months on from Joel grooming and assaulting Lauren, even leaving her for dead, events came full circle in a twist actor Calum called “justice”. Lauren was revealed to have murdered Joel during their final showdown, with her and Max heading off into the dark of night.

Fearing he would come after her as the walls closed on him, she ended up coming face-to-face with him one last time. This meeting ended with her hitting Joel over the head with a brick, killing him.

Realising what she’d done, Lauren was reeling as Max then made a shocking move to protect her. Max threw Joel’s lifeless corpse over the bridge, sending him into the river below where he would later be found.

Max did this to try and make the death look like suicide. Of course this didn’t end up happening as officers realised he had been killed. So what did Joel actor Calum make of his final scenes and his killer?

Speaking to The Mirror ahead of the episode, he called the move “justice” adding the storyline with Lauren had “come full circle”. He was happy for it to be Lauren out of the other suspects, and revealed he’d known for some time that this was how their story would end.

He told us: “I found out maybe a couple of months before shooting it that it was going to be Lauren, but also that there were going to be so many twists and turns along the way. I was like: ‘This is going to be good! If we’re trying to piece it all together, hopefully the audience are going to get the same effect’ – which seems to be that they’re enjoying it and trying to piece it together.”

He went on: “When I found out it was Lauren, soap justice is definitely a thing and I think that’s the best justice he could have got. He didn’t deliberately try to kill her but he attacked her viciously and nearly killed her.

“For it to come full circle and for him to get his comeuppance from the person that he attacked, when she was vulnerable and defenceless, I think it’s what he deserves.”

Detailing filming those last episodes, and Joel’s demise, Calum told us: “I kind of left and came back. I finished in July really, then just came back to film my final episode and it was nice to come back and see everyone. But when I came back, it was like we were filming a movie. One of the scenes, we spent 12 hours shooting. We had all these different cameras and green screens and special effects. I’ve never experienced anything like that before so it was incredible.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
