Coronation Street fans have their eyes peeled for the reason behind Gail Platt’s sudden exit from the ITV cobbles after the return of her old flame Jesse
Coronation Street legend Gail Platt could be leaving the street in a hurry for a very unexpected reason, fans have theorised.
In a completely out of left field twist, some fans appear to think Gail could be hiding a big secret – that she’s fallen pregnant with her old flame Jesse, who recently returned to the ITV cobbles.
Though plenty of fans were clearly joking in their assumptions, some seemed to seriously consider the possibility of the soap tackling a geriatric pregnancy storyline. It’s not the craziest thing to have happened in Soapland – and in real life, the oldest woman to give birth to twins conceived at the age of 74.
That’s Erramatti Mangayamma, who is currently the oldest living mother and was able to conceive using IVF with donor eggs. She welcomed two girls by caesarean section in India.
Gail, meanwhile, is 73 in the soap – the same age as her actress Helen Worth. So technically, a pregnancy is possible, especially due to the age gap between her and Jesse, who is only 55.
Airing their theories on social media, one fan joked: “Watch out, soon enough [people] will be saying Gail Platt is pregnant!” as another joked: “Gail Platt pregnancy sealed?”
Others became more serious as one warned: “She better not be!” and over on X – formerly Twitter – one user said: “Mark my words she’ll end up pregnant or something and want to raise the baby abroad.”
Another keen social media user echoed: “I’d actually love this because they could kill her off-screen and send the baby to David and Shona to raise, or have them appear years later as a surprise.”
Fans think Gail could be expecting
Helen confirmed earlier this year she’ll be quitting the cobbles, admitting: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.
“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
