Coronation Street fans are convinced that Jason Grimshaw’s real reason for returning to the cobbles has been ‘exposed’ and it’s heartbreaking for his mum Eileen
Coronation Street fans believe they’ve pieced together the real reason behind Jason Grimshaw’s return, and it spells heartache for Eileen.
Jason, played by Ryan Thomas, first graced the cobbles in 2000 as the son of the iconic Eileen (Sue Cleaver), quickly becoming a fan favourite and featuring in numerous major plotlines. His stint on the show was marked by romantic entanglements and local disputes before he left Weatherfield for Thailand in 2016.
However, news broke this week that Jason will be making a comeback to the soap, coinciding with Eileen’s permanent exit – a decision made by actress Sue Cleaver after a 25-year run on the series. “It was a no-brainer for Ryan to return when he was asked – it’s all for Sue,” an insider told the Sun.
“She’s like a second mum to him and he was willing to do anything to make her send off as special as she deserves it to be. He’s not acted for a while so it’s a bit daunting but he played Jason for so long that he’s looking forward to going back to the cobbles.”, reports Leicestershire Live.
However, fans have speculated a sorrowful twist in Jason’s return storyline that could leave his mother Eileen heartbroken. It’s worth noting that Jason’s aunt Julie (Katy Cavanagh) also recently returned after a decade-long absence.
In a heartbreaking twist, it has emerged that the character Julie on the beloved show is battling cancer and faces a grave outlook. However, she has yet to break this devastating news to Eileen, even though Todd (portrayed by Gareth Pierce) and George Shuttleworth (played by Tony Maudsley), Eileen’s partner, are in the know.

This sad situation has led fans to speculate wildly about another character’s return to the show. Amid discussions about Jason coming back to the programme, a fan on a Coronation Street Facebook group speculated: “Watch the producers give him cancer as well as Julie!”
This sparked agreement among other viewers, with one echoing: “Just what I thought as well.” Another added their concern, saying: “I bloody hope not, I can’t deal with all the death and sadness at the moment!”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
