Coronation Street fans ‘sobbing’ as knife horror ends in death amid change to soap

Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) was viciously attacked by his own brothers in horrifying scenes

Coronation Street fans have been left ‘sobbing’ as a stabbing ended in the death of one character amid what some thought was a change to the long-running show.

Monday night’s (January 6) edition of the ITV soap shone a light on the horrors of knife crime as Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) was viciously attacked by his own brothers – Matty and Logan – who have been nothing but trouble since their arrival in Weatherfield last year.

Viewers first saw things escalate when DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) showed Mason photographs taken at the crime scene of her late partner Becky’s death and revealed that his brothers were behind the murder.

Determined to take his brothers down, Mason searched their flat and found a WWII helmet, matched to the one listed in Becky’s case file, and handed it into the police station. After being questioned by DC Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), the brothers went looking for Mason intent on brutal revenge.

When the altercation broke out in the children’s play area at the precinct, Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) managed to make his escape. Abi Webster (Sally Carmen) was then the first at the scene to find Mason bleeding and did her best to stop the flow of blood before the ambulance showed up, which was delayed due to a hoax call.

Betsy Swain arrived, and she and Abi assured a scared Mason that he would be alright – but attempts to save his life ultimately failed. As news spread to the community, Corrie viewers saw that the knife had been brought into the horrifying scene by Dylan, who was devastated by what had then unfolded.

Reacting to the scenes on social media, Corrie fans admitted to being in tears over what they had watched while others couldn’t help but notice the changes made to the popular soap to tell the hard-hitting knife crime storyline.

Didn’t expect that episode and I didn’t expect this reaction, but that’s the point I guess #Corrie delivered today.” @luciferseve commented: “Is it just me or is the lighting and cinematography different? like this doesn’t feel or look like soap. at least, it’s different from what we usually see #corrie.”@MyEnragedSharkR added: “Absolutely SOBBED at tonight’s Coronation Street. The way they turned Mason’s character from someone I was actively hating into someone I was genuinely fond of is great writing #Corrie.”
