There were more emotional scenes in the ITV soap as final goodbye was paid to Paul Foreman
There were more emotional scenes in Coronation Street as a final goodbye was paid to Paul Foreman as he was laid to rest. Last month, viewers were left in tears when the character died in the hospital, 17 months after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
At the end of the long-running storyline, which showed the impact of the life-shortening disease on not just Paul but his wife family, Corri fans saw Bernie Winter and Summer Spellman with Paul when his health took a sudden turn as he started struggling to breathe.
The pair called for an ambulance and Paul was rushed to the hospital where Bernie, Summer and Paul’s sister Gemma Winter-Brown were soon told by doctors there was nothing more they could do and they headed in to say their emotional goodbyes to Paul.
But in a tragic turn of events, Paul’s husband Billy Mayhew didn’t make it to the hospital in time to fulfil his promise of being by Paul’s side when the time came due to a string of unfortunate events that delayed him getting there and arriving once Paul had already passed.
However, he did think he got to tell Paul how he felt over the phone but in reality, Paul had already tragically passed. But as Paul’s funeral arrived during Wednesday night’s (October 2) trip to Weathefield, Bernie’s emotions got the better of her and she admitted the truth to Billy, who had just conducted his husband’s funeral on the first anniversary of them getting married.
The grieving mother took revenge for Billy letting Paul’s estranged father Denny Foreman attend the funeral. The pair ended up arguing at the end of the service after a drunken Denny emerged, taking Bernie by surprise. They argued over which one had best supported Paul.
“I told him how much I loved him,” Billy told her, but Bernie interrupted: “He was already dead, Billy!” She immediately regretted her confession, but it was too late. Billy reeled over the news and was later shown turning up drunk at Paul’s wake with Bernie causing a scene herself over the fundraiser for Bethany Platt’s medical bills.
But Corrie fans took to social media to share their sadness at Paul’s funeral not being without drama and were also confused by those in attendance at the funeral, which comes ahead of a special rave being put together by Bernie and Gemma.
@ChrisAnstey74 said: “Could we not have a funeral episode where the funeral is the focus without ruining it with unnecessary DRAMA? #Corrie.” @TheWhiskeyMary replied: “Soapland isn’t made like that.” @StuartBeckMP commented: “Why’ve they always got to ruin it. Surely, there was enough drama in the funeral as is without dropping that bombshell. #corrie.”
@bosdovja92 posted: “#corrie I know extras are paid to literally just fill out the numbers but it’s so funny to see the cast crying and holding each other and this random group of unknown faces sat there like.” @DavidJosephLaw2 asked: “Why do they always have random extras at weddings and funerals on these soaps. #Corrie.” @B73Shell shared: “Paul was so loved, yet there was hardly anyone at his funeral?? #Corrie #CoronationStreet.” @KarenlovesGB added: “Can’t believe they didn’t fill the church up for poor Apollo’s funeral #Corrie.”
