Coronation Street airs update on classic character

Someone’s been off at the wrestling matches!

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has aired an update on classic character Les Battersby following the recent drama between sisters Toyah and Leanne.

The latest visit to Weatherfield picked up on the lingering tension between the sisters following the recent revelation that Toyah had an affair with Leanne’s partner Nick.

In Friday’s (October 18) episode, Leanne suggested to Toyah that they should move out of Nick’s flat, so he could move back in with Sam.

“I think it’s only fair that he can be with Sam,” Leanne told her sister. “I just think it’s right that Sam is with his dad and he doesn’t have to move out again.”

Toyah was surprised when Leanne announced that she wanted to live on her own “for a bit”, adding: “To be honest, I’m not sure I’m in the right headspace to share with you at the minute.”

Although Leanne’s rejection gobsmacked her, Toyah had to put on a brave face to tell young Sam that she’d be moving out of Nick’s flat.

“Are you sure you can’t stay as well? All of us?” Sam asked the sisters.

“It’s win-win, isn’t it? You’re going to get two fridges to raid, double the number of streaming subscriptions, spare room to put all your stuff in,” Toyah assured Sam.

As the sisters were packing up the flat in a later scene, Leanne revealed that she’d recently had an unpleasant phone call with her dad Les.

“I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago, he was drunk, obviously,” Leanne reported to Toyah. “He expected me to summarise what’s been happening in me life since the last time we spoke.”

She admitted she hadn’t told Les the truth: “I said nothing much had happened. I could hardly hear him anyway. I think he was at some wrestling show.”

Les had asked Leanne to message him so they could meet up for a drink, but when she did just that, he never replied.

“Pretty standard line of communication with me dad,” Leanne glumly admitted.

The Coronation Street writers’ reference to the character attending a wrestling match is seemingly a cheeky nod to Les actor Bruce Jones getting involved with the sport in real life.

Jones made his professional wrestling debut earlier this year for the SOVPRO (Sovereign Pro Wrestling) promotion, where he led cheekily-named faction ‘The Les Battersby World Order’ and took part in a ‘Coronation Street Fight’. He has even faced off with former Corrie co-star Steven Arnold (who played as Ashley Peacock) during his wrestling stint.

Unfortunately, Coronation Street star Ben Price recently confirmed there’s no way back for Leanne and Nick as a couple.

“He’s always going to love her. Part of Nick still loves her but it’s definitely finished. It’s definitely over, it’s not one of those half break-ups,” he commented. “I think something changed for him when she went to the Institute, for Nick that was the end.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
