BBC EastEnders proposal leaves fans in tears as they point out a major continuity issue

Tuesday’s trip to Albert Square drew to an end on a cliff-hanger as Eve Unwin proposed to Suki Panesar in front of Ayesha. But soap fans have called a major continuity error.

EastEnders fans celebrated as Eve Unwin proposed to Suki Panesar this Tuesday but the joy was short-lived as they wondered if she was still married to Stacey Slater.

The fan favourite played by Heather Peace is known to wear her heart on her sleeve and was on edge as she took a big step on the soap, aired on BBC Two this Tuesday, August 6, dropping down to one knee while Robbie Williams’ She’s The One was playing in The Queen Vic.

Making the moment even more special, Eve proposed to Suki Panesar (portrayed by Balvinder Sopal) in Punjabi and presenter her with the late Debbie’s ring, which she acquired from a cash-strapped Reiss Colwell, Debbie’s unsuspected murderer, moments prior.

While many viewers of the London-based drama were moved by the romantic move, others were appalled that Eve was giving away Debbie’s ring to Suki, unaware of its history, just as another bunch of soap fans wondered what marrying Suki would mean for Eve’s marriage with Stacey Slater.

“It’s all very well – nice proposal and that, but… isn’t Eve still married to Stacey?”, one viewer questioned on X, otherwise known as Twitter, while another echoed: “not eve proposing to suki when she’s still legally married to Stacey.”

“Stacey and eve still being married is so hilair to me have they not heard of annulment?”, a third soap watcher asked. One final fan commented: “Is Eve divorced from Stacey?”

Long-term viewers will remember that Eve was brought to Walford by Stacey Slater in October, 2021, upon the latter’s release from prison, where she was sent following a brutal showdown with Ruby Allen.

When Stacey’s mother Jean (Gillian Wright) met Eve and voiced her disapproval, the owner of Stacey’s Baps informed her that their marriage had not been motivated by love. Instead, Stacey agreed to marry Eve to secure her release from prison, allowing the former solicitor to have a place to call home. The pair of women have since gone back to a normal life as a legally married couple and a truly close-knit duo.

Tuesday’s EastEnders instalment ended on a cliff-hanger as viewers have yet to find out what Suki will say, particularly as her former love interest Ayesha (Laila Rouass) made her arrival in Walford on Monday.

In an early BBC iPlayer release, soap watchers were able to see Ayesha’s encounter with the Panesars, the first since Nish murdered her husband Hardeep.
