BBC Breakfast turns awkward as Emmerdale icon grilled on acting career after soap exit

BBC Breakfast took an awkward turn on Saturday as an Emmerdale icon was forced to correct host Roger Johnson as he was grilled on his acting and farming career

BBC Breakfast took an awkward turn on Saturday during an interview with Kelvin Fletcher.

Kelvin, 40, is best known for playing Andy Sugden on Emmerdale for 20 years and since leaving the ITV soap in 2016, he has turned his hand to farming.

The actor and his wife Liz Marsland, as well as their four young children, have embraced a new life as first-time farmers on a 120-acre plot on the edge of the Peak District.

As such, the family have landed their own shows with Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure and Fletchers’ Family Farm. This Sunday will see a Fletchers’ Family Farm Christmas Special air at 6pm on ITV.

Appearing on Saturday’s BBC Breakfast, Kelvin was grilled on life as a farmer by hosts Roger Johnson and Naga Munchetty.

Presenter Roger asked: “There was one thing that Jeremy Clarkson said, I think it was at the end of series one [of Jeremy’s own farming series Clarkson’s Farm] when he said how little money he’d made that year, literally, a handful of pounds. He said what’s it like for other farmers they don’t have a series of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? or The Grand Tour to fall back on.

“Obviously you had your very successful acting career and then you made a very different choice.” However, Kelvin was quick to interrupt over claims of his past acting career: “I’ve still got it, it’s not gone yet!”

Roger continued: “Does that help, I’m trying to get to the point here, do you need to rely on that in order to help make the farm work or can the farm stand on its own.”

To which Kelvin replied: “I think every farm is different, you know there’s many farmers out there with second jobs. I guess I’m one of those farmers with another job!”, he added that for his farm while there is a “commercial” endeavor, it is more of a lifestyle change for his family.

After leaving Emmerdale back in 2016, Kelvin won Strictly Come Dancing in 2019. Meanwhile, he has appeared in the likes of Death In Paradise, Moving On, The Teacher, McDonald and Dodds and more recently Father Brown.

BBC Breakfast airs at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
