ITV Coronation Street’s Peter Ash reveals new role months after tragic soap exit

Former Coronation Street star Peter Ash appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday

Good Morning Britain had a catch-up with former Coronation Street star Peter Ash on Tuesday’s programme.

Fans of the soap will remember that Peter, 40, portrayed Paul Foreman in the ITV series. His character met a tragic end in September after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

As Paul’s health declined, he tied the knot with his love Billy Mayhew, played by Daniel Brocklebank, and spent his final days confined to his flat. Paul passed away in 2024, a year and five months post-diagnosis, earning Peter a National Television Award for Serial Drama Performance for his moving performance.

Now, half a year on, Peter joined the Good Morning Britain team to discuss his latest venture, appearing in the play Picture You Dead, which is an exciting stage version of Peter James’ popular novel. He’ll be hitting the road for the tour from 6 February to 17 May 2025.

Peter showcased a new look during his appearance, sporting longer locks and a beard, a stark contrast to his Coronation Street character’s short hair and clean-shaven face, reports Lancs Live.

In a surprise twist during the interview, hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls presented Peter with a birthday cake live on air as he marked his 40th birthday. The actor was visibly surprised when Richard Arnold entered the studio with the candle-lit cake.

Following his GMB appearance, Peter took to Instagram to express his gratitude, writing: “What a lovely way to start my 40th birthday! Thank you, @gmb for the cake! #HappyBirthdayToMe #40thBirthday.”

Fans flooded the comments with warm wishes for Corrie favourite Peter, with one person saying: “Happy birthday and many blessings for you Peter! “, while another commented: “Happy 40th birthday”. Further messages from viewers included: “Happy 40th birthday, enjoy your day” and someone who shares their special day posted: “We share a Birthday! Have a great day, lots of love xx.”

The popular actor expressed his gratitude following a National Television Award win last year. At the time, he shared: “Still think I’m coming down off the high from last week’s National Television Awards!”

Adding further thanks, he said: “Thank you again to everyone who voted. I am so glad that Paul’s story has resonated with so many people. I also feel very lucky to have worked alongside such an incredible cast and crew on this MND storyline. #NTA #NationalTelevisionAwards #Corrie #CoronationStreet #MND #MotorNeuroneDisease.”

Coronation Street is on ITV1 at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on ITV X and STV.
