The popular character has been on the cobbles for years
Coronation Street viewers believe they’ve figured out who the new barmaid at the Rovers Return is. The iconic pub, one of the most recognisable in all of soapland, has a rich history spanning the soap’s 65-year run on our screens.
Over the decades, we’ve seen many faces behind that famous bar, from soap legends like Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) and Liz McDonald (Beverly Callard), to newcomers like Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) and Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan). At present, Carla Connor (Alison King) owns the pub, after Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) and Daisy used stolen cash from Carla’s factory to purchase it during their financial woes.
When Carla discovered this, she was livid but agreed not to report Daisy and Jenny, taking ownership of the Rovers as it had been bought with her money. However, recently, due to Carla’s need for a kidney transplant, she has demanded her money back from Daisy and Jenny.
If they can’t raise the funds themselves, Carla insisted they sell the pub – or she’ll involve the police. Since then, Jenny has been trying to inject some extra cash into the pub to pay Carla back. In Wednesday’s episode (January 22), she hosted a pub quiz – which, true to soap form, ended in chaos, reports Plymouth Live.
After Jenny drafted in a much-loved character to assist at the tavern, fervent Coronation Street viewers are clamouring for her to become the newest barmaid at the storied Rovers Return. In scenes that delighted fans, none other than Weatherfield’s own Mary Taylor (portrayed by Patti Clare) was seen managing the venue, and supporters were thrilled to witness her serving up ale.
Fans think Mary will be the new barmaid
An enthusiastic fans’ debate erupted on a Coronation Street Facebook group, with one fan starting the conversation: “What did we all think of Mary helping out behind the bar in the Rovers? ” Quick to respond, another chimed in: “She should be the next barmaid.”
A third concurred, adding: “Wish it were permanent, love Mary.” Further praise was given as another advocated: “I’d love to see Mary’s character a bit more prominent. She looked well behind the bar.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
