EastEnders’ Grant Mitchell actor Ross Kemp will be fronting a special documentary about the BBC soap for its 40th anniversary, and he’ll be joined by cast from the past and present

There’s some familiar faces about to be back onscreen in a treat for EastEnders fans, as part of a special episode of the BBC soap.

In a new documentary hosted by Grant Mitchell actor Ross Kemp, he will be joined by a number of cast members old and new to discuss some of the show’s most groundbreaking storylines over the past 40 years. Ahead of an epic week of episodes for the big birthday, with Grant making an explosive comeback, fans will also be treated to a look back at some of the show’s most iconic moments.

The show has announced a documentary covering 40 years of EastEnders will air on BBC One as part of the celebrations next month. Titled EastEnders: 40 Years on The Square, the hour-long episode will offer all kinds of nostalgia and discussion over some of the show’s biggest scenes ever.

With that, we will get to see some old favourites as past cast members will appear to talk about the moments shown, alongside some of the existing cast. Ross will host the doc, with viewers offered behind the scenes access to the show and some of its most memorable moments.

Storylines thought to be revisited include the first kiss between two gay men on British television, Kat Slater’s historical abuse, Mark Fowler and Zack’s HIV diagnoses, as well as many more plots. Ross will get the say of those involved in the plots as they look back on the past.

Ross has discussed the special role he will play, revealing: “It was a privilege to be asked to present this documentary, celebrating 40 years of EastEnders. During the making of it I was constantly reminded of the impact EastEnders has, not only on the cast and everyone that works on the show, but also on the audience, as well as the effect it has had culturally in the United Kingdom.

“It also gave me a wonderful opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with some of my dear friends – old and new – and celebrate this special anniversary, it was an absolute honour.” Executive Producer of Pulse Films Joe Ingham added: “EastEnders has had a transformative effect on television audiences for forty years – myself included.

“It has been a privilege to work with the legend that is Ross Kemp and an honour to spend time in Walford, revealing a never before seen side of Albert Square, forging emotional family reunions, and exploring the impact its residents have and continue to have beyond E20.” Ross recently teased his big comeback as Grant after nearly nine years away.

He spilled: “I’m delighted to be returning to EastEnders as the show heads towards its 40th anniversary. EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary, is an absolute honour. Grant has never been far from the action and let’s just say, this time is no different as he certainly comes back with a bang.”

Soap boss Chris Clenshaw also reacted to the exciting news, promising the anniversary and Grant’s comeback would be “unmissable”. He said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ross Kemp back to EastEnders as he reprises the legendary role of Grant Mitchell. Whilst I’m not currently revealing exactly what brings Grant back to Walford, I can say that his return will play a significant part in the show’s 40th anniversary, and will make up many moments of truly unmissable TV.”

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
