EastEnders Cindy Beale ‘lets slip’ who really attacked her – and it’s not who you think

EastEnders’ Cindy Beale appeared to drop a major hint about the identity of her attacker who left her for dead over Christmas, as she woke from her coma on the BBC soap

There could have been the biggest clue yet as to who attacked Cindy Beale on EastEnders, after a scene in the latest episode.

Cindy woke from her coma after weeks in hospital, following on from a mystery person attacking her with a shovel on Christmas Day. There are a whole list of suspects, including her partner, her fling, her ex and her own children.

But viewers will not find out who the real attacker was until next month, when the BBC soap celebrates 40 years on air. As part of the big anniversary celebrations, a number of storylines including a stunt, returns and a wedding have been planned.

Also set to air is the Cindy whodunnit reveal, but might a clue have given the game away? The scene at the very end of Thursday’s episode saw Cindy name someone, and it could well be her attacker.

Of course she is unlikely to know who it was judging by the scene of the attack we saw on Christmas Day. She had her back to them when they raised a metal shovel and hit her over the head, leaving her for dead.

But might there have been a very cryptic clue foreshadowing who gets named as the attacker next month? It is soap land after all, so might bosses have given us a major clue of who caused Cindy’s fight for life?

Given some other clues, it could well be the case. As doctors spoke with Cindy has she came round at the hospital, she tried to speak. When they asked her to repeat what she had said, Cindy simply replied: “Ian.”

Does this put her partner Ian in the frame for the attack, after he found out she’d been cheating on him with Junior Knight, and that she still loved her ex George Knight, on Christmas Day? Ian was left humiliated by the betrayal, and Cindy’s confession that Ian did not satisfy her needs.

Since the big episode there have been hints to Ian’s guilt. Not only might he be the person you’d least expect, but he also vanished for a number of episodes.

When Elaine Peacock gathered all of the suspects in The Queen Vic days ago, asking who the attacker was, he was the only one asides his mother Kathy Beale who wasn’t there. His son Peter Beale also noted that he had not visited Cindy at the hospital at all, while others had done.

Peter feared his father was guilty, and other characters have outright accused him of being the attacker. Viewers were quick to notice we’ve seen less of him than the other suspects, so might Cindy saying his name be the final clue that reveals Ian was the one who nearly killed her?

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
