ITV Emmerdale fans call out worrying plot hole and says character must have ‘selective memory’ in latest twist

After Dawn goes against Kim, fans are worried about the severe consequences facing the village

Emmerdale has turned up the volume on the drama as we welcome 2025, but fans have called out the soap for having forgotten a key storyline amongst all the plot twists.

In recent episodes, viewers saw Dawn Fletcher uncover the ‘truth’ behind her dad’s (Will Taylor) death after he unexpectedly suffered from a heart attack on Christmas Day. Will had pre-recorded a video addressed to Dawn, in which he said: “Dawn, love. I hope this means that you’re watching and not someone else. But, if you are… Then that means I’m dead” before adding: “it also means that Kim did it.”

Unsurprisingly, this led to some confusion for Dawn as just before finding the video she spoke to the coroner who ruled Will’s death as “natural causes”. Will’s untimely death came after months of him and Kim going behind each other’s backs to get “revenge” on one another.

Kim was unaware of the extent Will was willing to go, until Joe Tate returned and revealed Will’s plans, which was then followed by the heart attack.

After Dawn’s discovery, Tuesday (January 7) was Will’s funeral, and as Kim stood to give a heartfelt eulogy Dawn called her out in front of everyone in attendance: “Dad left a video. He said you took a hit on him. You wanted him dead.”

In true soap style that wasn’t the end of the drama, as police soon arrived to take Kim into questioning, orchestrated of course by Dawn. Fans of the ITV soap aren’t totally convinced that Dawn would be so quick to involve the police, and claim that there seems to be a storyline that writers have “forgotten” about.

Posting on X, @tamlizann25 asked: “Has Dawn forgot about Malone?”. Users on Instagram appear to be in agreement, with @mister_trabs echoing: “There’s a huge portion of Dawn and Will’s history that the script writers seem to have forgotten. They were involved in the murder of a police detective. Will disposed of the body on Home Farm”, before adding that “Kim arranged for the body to be taken care of”.

DI Malone was introduced into the Dales in 2020, but the dodgy Detective certainly wasn’t law abiding himself, particularly when he attempted to convince Dawn to overdose after she exposed his affair with Harriet and reported his criminal empire. After Harriet walked in on them, she hit him over the head with a kettle, but it was Dawn that killed him by shooting him with the gun he used to coax her into taking her own life.

Other fans are also confused as to why Dawn would risk going against Kim, @uptheemill wrote: “Why is Dawn acting like she’s an angel, she has plenty of skeletons in her wardrobe?” @bainbridge_leah continued: “Dawn has a very short memory! Kim can easily shut her down.”

@vickiedampier penned that Dawn must have “selective memory”, and one fan @craig_myers8391 theorised: “At the very end of an episode last week we saw a clip from a future episode, the screen was a different shade of colour and there was haunting music, and we saw a body being dropped into a river. Maybe that’s what you’re talking about and it looks like that will feature in a storyline in the near future” referring to one of the flashforward scenes Emmerdale showed previously.

Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX.
