EastEnders’ Lauren Branning could be set for a worrying new storyline in upcoming scenes on the BBC soap.

The character, played by actress Jacqueline Jossa, featured in concerning scenes on Monday night. As she continued to recover from injuries sustained in the crush at the nightclub last month, she was visibly in pain.

In recent episodes we have seen her clutching her side and wincing in agony. That continued on Monday as she was once again seen hurting, holding her injuries.

Lauren suffered crush injuries and was rushed to hospital at the time, after she was trampled on after being crushed in the incident. On Monday, we saw the character shouting out in pain and limping, as her partner Peter Beale held onto her.

Peter asked if she should be working but she said she would be fine, as she held onto her side. Later in the episode, she was seen doubled over in pain, leaning against a car.

Harry Mitchell and her cousin Penny Branning raced over to help her but she once again said she was fine. Peter raced out with her pain killers, as she continued to gasp in pain.

Sounding tearful, Lauren shouted out for Peter to get her some water. She then lectured Penny, referencing the fact she was “in pain”. Later in the episode Lauren fumed over her run-in with Penny, but Peter was visibly concerned.

He told Lauren he was worried about her, as she revealed she couldn’t do anything without taking painkillers. So is something going on with Lauren and is there more to the pain she is experiencing?

Ahead of the truth about the crush coming out, it remains to be seen if it really is her injuries causing her so much pain amid her worrying her loved ones. So could a new storyline be on the cards for Lauren, and is there something more sinister going on in a health storyline?

It comes amid a possible exit for Penny, after a row with Lauren and her sister Amy Mitchell. Penny shocked her family as she vowed to leave in the latest episode, but her confession led to stepmother Denise Fox dropping a bombshell.

Denise finally confessed it was Chelsea Fox who was to blame for the crush and not Penny. But with the truth out, will Penny stick around as people attempt to make amends with her, or will she still leave?

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
