Coronation Street viewers have been seeing more of Gus Deering recently amid a new explosive Joel Deering storyline
Coronation Street is set to shock viewers with a dramatic new murder twist involving Joel Deering. In the upcoming episodes, Joel, portrayed by Calum Lill, becomes the centre of a massive whodunnit after his sudden disappearance.

Early next week, PC Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) and Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) scrutinise CCTV footage from a train station car park, spotting Joel and his father Gus (Chris Garner) near a locker. Later, Kit grills Gus for information about his missing son’s location.
However, the plot thickens later in the week when it’s revealed that Joel has been brutally murdered, having suffered two blows to the head, likely from a crowbar. This revelation puts many of Weatherfield’s residents under suspicion.
The gripping storyline has led to increased screen time for Gus, played by Chris Garner. However, fans may be intrigued to learn that this isn’t Chris’ first stint on the cobbles, nor his only appearance on an ITV soap.
Audiences were first introduced to Gus earlier this year but Chris’ initial Coronation Street role dates back to 1999. He played Malcolm Fairhurst, a character connected to iconic figures Kevin and Sally Webster, brought to life by Michael Le Vell and Sally Dynevor, reports the Mirror.

Malcolm served as a Court Welfare Officer who probed into Kevin and Sally’s situation when they both sought custody of their daughters Rosie and Sophie.
However, Chris isn’t a stranger to the soap world, having appeared in Emmerdale in 2010 as Don Holmes and again in 2019 as Noel. He’s also had roles in The Bill, where he portrayed three different characters: David Edmonds, P.C Harrison and Tom Baird.
In addition, Chris has played various characters such as Jason Shields, DS Merriman and Jim Tomlin in Casualty over the years. His other television appearances include The A Word, Doctors and The Royal, among others.

Meanwhike, in upcoming scenes, Weatherfield residents will be interrogated about their last encounters with Joel and their whereabouts at the time – but who is hiding something?
It’s revealed that Joel was struck twice on the head with a heavy weapon, believed to be a crowbar. Could one resident be guilty when they are seen with this exact item? Meanwhile, another resident’s car satnav indicates they were near Joel’s home around the time of his probable murder.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
