Lisa receives disappointing news.
DS Lisa Swain has faced a major setback in putting villain Joel Deering behind bars in Coronation Street.
Two major storylines converged in the latest visit to Weatherfield, as developments in Lisa’s love life clashed with her work to prove Joel’s criminal misdeeds.
Monday’s (October 7) episode saw police officer Kit Green searching Joel’s laptop for possible evidence they could use against the villain.
Kit was horrified to find the threatening messages Joel had sent to Betsy to coerce her into ordering the dodgy labour-inducing drugs he’d later use on Lauren. One message threatened Joel would kill Betsy if she didn’t comply with his demands.
Lisa now had more motivation than ever to put Joel behind bars, yet she would eventually be taken off the case entirely.
DI Costello told Lisa that he was reassigning Joel’s case to Kit because he worried Lisa’s judgement could be clouded over Betsy’s involvement.
Elsewhere in the episode, Carla was due in court on accusations of actual bodily harm for knocking over a lad.
There was an unfortunate conflict where important clients were touring the factory, so they were not impressed when Betsy let slip about Carla’s court appearance and Sarah being stuck in Turkey with Bethany.
Carla was followed back to the factory by Tom, the father of the lad she’d injured. When she tried to call for help, Tom knocked the phone from her hand.
DS Lisa Swain soon arrived at the factory to catch up with Betsy, only to find Tom threatening Carla. She placed Tom under arrest and quickly called for backup to bring him in.
Lisa later met up with Carla at Streetcars to have a few glasses of wine upstairs. Carla shared her conflicted feelings about divorcing Peter Barlow, whereas Lisa admitted she’d not had a proper relationship since her wife’s death.
“I think you sound lonely,” Carla admitted to her.
In a tender moment, Carla moved a strand of hair from Lisa’s face and encouraged her to take care of herself. There was a charged energy between the two women before Lisa quickly grabbed her bag to rush out.
“No, Lisa, wait,” Carla called out, but Lisa was gone.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
