A behind-the-scenes clip showed how he filmed one of his character’s most chilling moments on the cobbles
Coronation Street star Calum Lill has been flooded with the same reaction as a behind-the-scenes clip showed how he filmed one of his character’s most chilling moments on the cobbles.
It’s become pretty clear in recent months that the actor is loved and loathed for playing Joel Deering in the ITV soap. The solicitor first arrived in Weatherfield as a new love interest for local legal expert Dee-Dee Bailey.
Their relationship was going from strength to strength, with plans to tie the know. That was until the truth about Joel was uncovered.
In a shocking twist earlier this year, it was revealed that Joel was Lauren Bolton’s ‘secret boyfriend’ and was behind her disappearance and presumed murder after he was seen attacking her with a chair leg.
It was unclear if Lauren was still alive until July, when she returned to visit a poorly Roy Cropper, who had just been released from prison suspected of killing her as he was the last one to see her alive months earlier – or so everyone thought.
It was in fact Joel who was the last to see Lauren and during an intense and emotional confrontation with Lauren at the hospital, the nature of their relationship unravelled as flashback scenes showed how Joel had groomed Lauren and left her fleeing for her life, before it was revealed she was pregnant with his child.
Since then, Joel has tried to keep Lauren quiet by secretly housing her in his flat, promising that she will be able to start a new life in Belfast. However, in a shocking twist, Joel was seen giving the teen a drug that saw her go into early labour with their son, Frankie, who is now fighting for his life in the hospital.
In the meantime, Dee-Dee discovered what her fiance had been up to, with Lauren not being the only young girl he has groomed. She’s since teamed up with DS Lisa Swain to bring Joel down and the pair appeared close when Swain was able to charge him over the buying the drugs used to prompt Lauren’s early labour as baby Frankie’s health remains in a fragile state.
Corrie, viewers saw Joel not show up to his plea hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest. After transferring money to Lauren and his ex-wife Emily, it is believed Joel may end up taking his own life.
The episode ended with Joel crying in his car. He recorded a message for Dee-Dee, telling her he still loves her. After ending the call, Joel looked at himself in the car mirror, and a large wound was shown across his face.
Now, Corrie’s social media team have shown how the scenes was filmed and it first showed how the scene unfolded on-screen before showing Calum filming it weeks earlier in front of a green screen in a studio, showing he wasn’t in a car at all.
The caption of the post read: “Take a look behind the scenes of how we filmed Joel’s unnerving message to Dee-Dee. You won’t believe how it was done! #Corrie #BTS @calumlill.”
Responding to the post, Corrie fans were full of praise for Calum’s portrayal of Joel. @gymnasticsfanatic said: “Just goes to show what an incredible actor is, that was insane to watch. To pull that out when you’re just sat in a green room with a camera going around, mind-blowing.”
@mattstanhope7 commented: “One of the best (and most believable) Corrie villains in a long long time.” @zoe_crabb wrote: “Mind-blowing. How good an actor is he.” @liza_jane_lit replied: “Joel is the best thing about Corro in ages! Calum is blooming awesome. Shame he has to go.” @inzspire_interiordesign added: “Fantastic actor! Absolutely incredible work, you’re a credit to your craft!”
