Jack P. Shepherd, who plays David Platt on the beloved ITV soap, shared his thoughts about scenes that involve food and drink and revealed that “eating can be a pain”
A Coronation Street star has revealed what the Rovers Return’s “pints” are really made of and explained why the actors shouldn’t “start drinking” them on set. Jack P. Shepherd, who plays David Platt on the beloved ITV soap, opened up about the topic of on-screen food and drink on a recent episode of the On The Sofa with Colson, Jack and Ben podcast (September 25).
In the episode, they read out a message from a fan who’d contacted the trio on Instagram to ask them what it was like for the stars when they film scenes that involve eating. They asked whether the food was “stone cold” and if they dread those particular parts.
Jack said eating could be a “pain”, but it would appear that the actors need to be especially careful when it comes to “pints”. “The eating can be a pain because usually, they film those scenes straight after friggin’ lunch when you’re full,” he said.
“So, you haven’t got enough room and also, if they have to keep going again and again, you’ve gotta, oh, it’s a new sandwich. I remember I first did scenes with Dolly-Rose (Campbell).
“Do you remember when she first joined as Gemma? When you’re new to the show, you’ll get this in the Rovers; you’ll know. Don’t drink or start drinking a pint because if we go again and again, you’re downing pints, mate, and they’re not real.
“Well, they’re not real, are they? It’s shandy. It’s a b****y lot.” Jack then revealed that his co-star was given biscuits for a scene, but she thought it would be “funny” to eat the entire pack. He described this as “brilliant” because it “made the scene”.

Unfortunately, it turned out that she was eating the biscuits in rehearsals and “must have gone through about six packets”. However, this wasn’t the only food-related insight offered to fans in the episode.
The trio went on to reveal a hilarious story from when they were previously filming a Christmas scene in the Platts’. Ryan Thomas, who played Jason Grimshaw on the show, finished his “entire” Christmas dinner during the scene.
Once he finished his meal, he exclaimed that it was “one of the best ones we’ve ever had” as though he “lived there”. Ben Price said he thought at the time: “Oh, wow; they really live it. It’s really in them.”
