What happened to Jags Panesar in BBC EastEnders as Vinny’s fate hangs in the balance

Terrified for her son Vinny’s fate during this Monday’s episode of EastEnders, Suki Panesar couldn’t help but remember the death of another one of her children, Jags Panesar.

Suki Panesar has grown terrified her son Vinny may face a grisly fate like his brother, Jags Panesar.

After being chased out of Walford by his own family over his abusive behaviour, EastEnders villain Nish Panesar (portrayed by Navin Chowdhry) returned to the Square with bombshell news as he shared that he was suffering from a heart condition named myocarditis, which required him to undergo a heart transplant.

Unfortunately, with the chance of a donor being low, Nish’s health is slowly deteriorating and after finding out that ex-wife Suki (Balvinder Sopal) was in cahoots with their son Vinny (Shiv Jalota) to take over the family empire, a plot for vengeance bloomed in his mind.

During this Monday’s instalment of the BBC One soap (September 23, 2024), Suki desperately tried to warn Vinny that Nish couldn’t be trusted and her worst fears were confirmed when she learned her ex-husband was planning to frame Vinny for his money laundering. Aware this meant Vinny could end up in prison, Suki – who has already lost two sons to the judicial system – couldn’t help but think of Jags Panesar, who suffered a tragic fate years before his brother Kheerat was thrown in prison for Ranveer Gulati’s murder.

Making his first appearance in Walford in October 2019, Jagvir “Jags” Singh Panesar was portrayed by actor Amar Adatia and first arrived in the Square with Kheerat when the pair decided to confront Ben Mitchell for stealing the latter’s car. After kidnapping Lola Pearce and being scolded by Kheerat over his behaviour, Jags became a favourite among fans as he called out his own mother Suki, standing up to her by criticising his family’s ways of making money.

But Jags’ tense relationship with Suki, who was left alone at the time as Nish was still in prison himself for murder, took a turn when he developed a romantic bond with Habiba Ahmed. The pair initially kept this relationship a secret, which Jags was not happy about, but when he finally told his family about the romance, Suki was the first to be outraged – and she hatched a plan to brutally punish him.

In a sickening move, Suki framed Jags for a robbery at former nightclub Ruby’s and an assault on Martin Fowler, saving her son Vinny from repercussions as he had actually staged the incident, injuring Martin, with a cash-strapped Ruby Allen. Jags was sentenced to four years in prison in 2020 but eventually got on the wrong side of a prison gang, prompting Kheerat to make an agreement with Ben Mitchell to arrange protection for him.

However, furious to see Kheerat get closer to Sharon Watts, his father Phil’s ex-wife, Ben Mitchell called off the protection in an act of rage, leading Jags to be stabbed to death in his cell. Jags’ death left a mark on his family but the wound was reopened in July, 2022, when Ben struggled to cope after his rape and Kheerat tried to help him. Overwhelmed with guilt, Ben told them he’d allowed Jags to die, triggering a brutal showdown in the Panesar home.
