Home and Away’s Perri Hayes to be confronted over exit plan

Tane’s mentorship gets too much for Perri.

Home and Away spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Home and Away’s Perri Hayes finds himself in trouble in scenes airing in the UK next week, after his secret plan to leave Summer Bay is rumbled.

Since Perri first arrived in the Bay over the summer to take part in Tane Parata’s fitness programme for disadvantaged young people, Tane has been trying his best to be a mentor to the teenager.

Despite Tane’s best efforts, Perri has struggled to accept his new friend’s kindness. This week at his 18th birthday celebrations, he lashes out at Tane, who had tried to encourage Perri to embrace his Māori heritage.

Following his outburst, Perri feels guilty and he goes to enjoy a birthday dinner with his mentor. He later says sorry to Tane for his angry reaction to the hāngī, and even gives him a hug to apologise.

While Tane takes the opportunity to try to bond with Perri further, bringing up their love for martial arts and their shared culture, Perri decides that he’d rather take up Mackenzie Booth’s offer to serve him a birthday beer.

Mackenzie assures Perri that Tane is only trying to do his best for him, but Perri continues to resist Tane’s keen efforts to bond with him.

When Mali Hudson decides to try speaking to Perri, he’s shocked to find him at the bus stop with his belongings. Perri admits that he’s going to leave Summer Bay and the pair have a heart-to-heart.

Soon afterwards, a serious-looking Mali approaches Tane at the gym and tells him that he needs to get home as quickly as he can.

When Tane catches up with Perri, he asks him not to leave and admits that although he won’t get everything right, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help Perri.

With the pair’s relationship back on slightly more even ground, Tane decides to help Perri with his reading. But Perri is upset when he realises that Tane has told Harper Matheson about his struggles with reading.

As hurt Perri reminds Tane that his dad spent years calling him stupid due to his academic struggles, Tane gently tells Perri that he hasn’t said a single stupid thing to him since they met.

Following their emotional chat, Perri reluctantly agrees to undergo an assessment of his reading level. Has Tane made a new breakthrough with Perri?

Home and Away airs these scenes on Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24 at 1.45pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. First-look screenings air at 6.30pm on 5STAR and the show also streams on My5.
